About Málaga

Including tips for the best time to visit Málaga

Málaga has reinvented itself in remarkable fashion. Previously, most holidays here entailed a direct transfer from Málaga airport to one of the surrounding resorts on the Costa del Sol – but not anymore.

Today, you can’t turn a corner without finding a museum or art gallery. Among the best are the Museo Picasso Málaga, which houses over 200 works by Spain’s most famous modern creator, and the Centre Pompidou Málaga, a contemporary art museum crowned by a giant, multi-coloured cube.

You can find the Pompidou and other modern attractions at Muelle Uno, an open-air shopping centre and collection of restaurants, next to the Port of Málaga. Do like the Malagueños do and treat yourself to a plate heaped with ‘boquerones’ (fried anchovies), or head to a back-street tapas bar in the centre and fill up on cheese, chorizo and Iberian ham. Then, walk it off with a stroll through the gardens of the Alcazaba – a crumbling Moorish fortress that has stood since the 11th century.

Málaga’s position between the mountains and the sea offers a pleasant microclimate which keeps beaches busy until well after the summer months. Malagueta Beach is the most popular, boasting top facilities and plenty of beachside restaurants.

Liked most the port area and market type shops there and bars and the views. Beach is a nice option in a city. Plenty of historic things to see. Car and fashion museum very good. Liked least that restaurants extremely meat oriented. Even tapas ones. Very few options if any for vegan/ vegetarian if you don’t eat dairy products.

Beautiful city, especially for a long weekend.

Beautiful city, especially for a long weekend. Mixture of fun and culture and it even has a beach on the other side of the harbour. Fabulous city for singles, couples and families - lots to do. Most places are easy to walk to. There were quite a few hen/stag events, but the noise got lost in the hubbub of the place, so it did not worry us.

It is a compact city so walking around is very easy. The public transport is excellent, we used the buses many times. Beautiful buildings and parks. Cafes and restaurants are many and very reasonable for cost.

It was our 3rd holiday to Malaga & we will definitely be back next year. Studio flat was clean & had everything we needed but stairs up to terrace felt a bit worrying as they were quite steep to walk up & down but overall a great holiday & we'll definitely come back.

Get up early for Alcazaba for a nice crowd free experience.

27 April 2024

Get up early for Alcazaba for a nice crowd free experience. There are at least two flemenco clubs in town, Kelipe Centro de Arte Flamenco and Teatro Flamenco Málaga Club. Recommend Restaurante Alexso and Blossom Restaurant for food.
