About Rovaniemi

Including tips for the best time to visit Rovaniemi

The capital of Lapland, Rovaniemi is best known as the official residence of Santa Claus. Apart from fluffy huskies, reindeers and breathtaking views of the northern lights, this Finnish city is home to top-class museums, fine dining options and a vibrant nightlife.

Rovaniemi has a host of museums that display the cultural and historical treasures of Finland. The Arktikum Science Museum focuses on the history of Finnish Lapland and life in the northern regions of the country. There's also a video room that gives you an experience of the Northern Lights. The Rovaniemi Art Museum highlights modern art of the region featuring Lapland artists. You'll be able to see images depicting nature and the wilderness alongside pictures of buildings and cityscapes.

A trip to the city of Rovaniemi is filled with adventure, exciting activities and new experiences. If you're in this region during November or December, try visiting Santa Village to witness the declaration of the Christmas season. At this place, you can go for sleigh or husky rides, spend the night in a typical northern cabin or sway to the beats of local music. An hour away from the city lies the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. This unique place offers you the opportunity to mine your own amethyst. Another interesting thing you can do during your Rovaniemi visit is stay in an igloo hotel. The glass roof of these cabins give you an open view of the sky lit up by the colours of the northern lights.

The town lives in the shadow of Santa Claus Village but is worth sightseeing for itself. The modern architecture, the Arcticum museum, good infrastructure, nice surroundings - there is much to see and do for a couple of days.

A nice town at the arctic circle, museums, sporting facilities, theatre, shopping malls, reastaurants, hotels. It has an airport connected with Helsinki, Dublin, Brusseles (and perhaps more). There is a whole village dedicated to the Santa Claus theme. There are buildings made from ice during the winter, some hotels and wedding-places among them.

Rovaniemi is a really great city to visit.

18 March 2024

Rovaniemi is a really great city to visit. In winter the city is under a lot of snow but has always trucks to get the snow out of the road, small rocks on the pavement to prevent from falling. Rovaniemi has a lot of green tracks and its is lovely to follow them along the river. Great places for children to play too. For dinner time, I can recommend the MonteRosa restaurant in the city center. Great and friendly service from all the employees, excellent food and drinks. (I can recommend the salmon soup, the grilled salmon and the reindeer cooked two ways). For lunch, I went to Cafe & Bar 21. It was busy from 12 to 15 (I guess very popular) but nonetheless very enjoyable. Combining the bar/coffee with Yuca (a mexican restaurant) is great because people can have different lunch if wished. The deserts are also excellent. For the activities, everybody can found something that they like. For the french people you can found the Nordic Odyssey office to book activities with a french translator (even if the english explanation I had where really understanding). It can always be helpful for the people who can't speak english. You can found supermarket everywhere and some of them are open until 22:00 which is great.

I loved it all.

17 March 2024

I loved it all..the taxis are quite expensive but the bus was great..I loved it that much I wanted to extend my stay. I will be back to chase the Aurora, unfortunately it didn’t so due to skies full of snow.

Santa from the city center was better than the one in SCV (at least for us). He was really communicative, giving us tips and tricks for aurora hunting. After we bought a picture we could take more with our own phone, made videos for our friends etc. We love that there are different places where you can barbeque during the walking. Lake from Artikum museum is a good place to see aurora. Loved the winter trails. Souvenirs are cheaper in SCV than in the city center.

The centre of Rovaniemi is easy to get around and has plenty of shops and cafes, plus supermarkets if you're self-catering. It is a perfect snowy destination in winter. We visited the Snow Hotel (you need to dress up warmly as its pretty cold, but a vodka in the Ice Bar helps!) and also Santa Village, which is probably best for families with small children
