About Paris

Including tips for the best time to visit Paris

As the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment and a constant trendsetter in the world of fashion, Paris has cemented itself as one of the world's must-see cities. In a country known for exceptional food, style and culture, the capital delivers on all three counts.

The city is split into 20 districts (known as 'arrondissements'), which all display their own character. Le Marais (in the fourth arrondissement) is famed for its medieval, meandering lanes, full of traditional patisseries and chic boutiques. The area is also home to the iconic cathedral of Notre-Dame, considered one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture.

The seventh arrondissement is home to some of Paris' most famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides and Musée d'Orsay. Neighbouring districts also have plenty to offer, such as the famous Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe and Opéra Garnier. In the centre of Paris you'll find the world-famous Musée du Louvre, home to tens of thousands of works of art, including da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa'. Further outside the city, but still worth a visit, are the mysterious Catacombs and the Château de Versailles.

Each French city takes pride in its cuisine and Paris is no exception, offering some of the world's best food. You'll find everything from three-Michelin-starred establishments like Restaurant Guy Savoy, to laid-back bistros like La Mascotte.

Offering fun for visitors of all ages, Disneyland Paris is located to the east of the city, in the suburb of Marne-la-Vallée and can be reached easily by train.

Incredibly overpriced and too often unpleasant customer service (proper rudeness experienced). General prices in most areas: cappuccino 7€, very average 2 course meal with tap water for €40 pp. Gin and tonic for no less than €14. Good luck!

It was our first trip so our itinerary featured all the tourist traps. We walked some of the Seine, the Louvre, the Arc and the Eiffel Tower. Beware pickpockets. Lots of stories about how they operate so we felt we were better prepared than others. Many things were closed as they prepare for the Olympics later this year. That was disappointing.

Paris is now an overrated city for many travellers because of its immigration problem. Thieves and pickpockets are everywhere, the streets smell of urine and are dirty. With few exceptions, it is very dangerous to walk the streets at night. Restaurants are overcrowded with a very loing que in front.

Paris is a good city, I encountered friendly locals which was a surprise as I’ve heard severally that French people were rude, I had a better experience with them. The hotel (Hotel Albert) was smaller than the pictures shown on booking.com, but it was comfortable. The elevator was slow and tiny as well. The buffet breakfast did not have a lot of options, the meals were very limited. But the staff at the front desk was very helpful at all times.

Great to see all the sights which had only been seen on TV before and to experience the atmosphere of this wonderful city. Would not, however recommend the Louvre as there are just far too many people allowed in at the one time. If you are an art lover which I'm not, it must be very frustrating trying to appreciate the works of art with hundreds of people taking selfies at every turn. The signage and information leaflet in the Louvre is appalling too. You will end up having to ask someone if you're looking for the Mona Lisa which everyone is of course but you'll be lucky to get close to it as there are hordes of people taking pictures. Sacre Coeur on the other hand is a must see. A beautiful church and an oasis of calm.

It's a lovely city but very crowded.

It's a lovely city but very crowded. I tried to make walking tours to see around but most of the streets are flooding with people. Shopping is not cheap in Paris. I dont mean the luxury brands, the regular shopping is also a bit pricy. You have lots of monuments etc to see, cafes and boulangeries to enjoy what is Paris is known for. Croissants and many desserts. Eating is also varies you can eat 15Euro meals and 50Euro meals they are all delicious but you have to decide what you want and make your own research.
