About Strasbourg

Including tips for the best time to visit Strasbourg

Strasbourg is the capital of France's Alsace region and showcases some mesmerising medieval architecture in its UNESCO-listed centre, the Grande Île (large island). Due to its location on the eastern border with Germany, it offers a unique cocktail of cultures from both sides. The centrepiece of the old town is the Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, with its gloating gargoyles, astronomical clock and intricate stained-glass windows. The centre is famous for being pedestrian-friendly, so it's easy to explore on foot or by bike. Each street is lined with crooked timber-framed houses, and as night falls the lantern-lit alleys evoke a fairytale atmosphere.

To delve further into Strasbourg's fascinating history, visit the Palais Rohan, a grand 18th-century palace which is now home to three museums: the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts), Musée Archéologique (Archaeological Museum) and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Museum of Decorative Arts). The nearby Historical Museum is also worth checking out, with plenty of interactive exhibits focusing on the city's early medieval days up until the founding of the European Union.

Strasbourg's magical atmosphere peaks from the end of November until December, when the festive markets appear. These have been held in the city for four centuries and feature arts and crafts, Alsatian Christmas decorations and local specialities like 'Kougelhopf' (a sweet bread usually filled with raisins) and Muenster cheese.

A beautiful medieval town with interesting architecture.

30 April 2024

A beautiful medieval town with interesting architecture. The guided tour (which was offered in 12 languages!!) with the boat through the river was nice and interesting. People in general and personnel of the hotel, restaurants and cafes were very polite, smiling and multilingual (something extremely useful if you don't speak French). The famous cathedral was beautiful architecturally but somehow "soulless" and icy cold. The stairs to the top need excellent physical condition. The charge was different for some of us, for no reason. It seemed that the person who was responsible for the tickets decided on spot about the price (some of us paid 8 euros while others 5 euros. We were all the same age with no students...). Unfortunately most of the restaurants and cafes aren't local but Asian so if you want to taste the local dishes you need to search a lot.

Strasbourg is easily accessed by train, easily walkable, has wonderful restaurants, shopping and the people are very friendly. There is so much to see, to do and to experience. This little village needs a good 3 days to really enjoy all that it has to offer.

Strasbourg struck me as a vibrant city with many young people and many nationalities. I found it easy to walk around the city and appreciated the many different styles of architecture. There was no outstanding museum or building, but the overall impression was good.

The history of the city of Strasbourg was never ending!

26 February 2024

The history of the city of Strasbourg was never ending! The old buildings, the beautiful views as well as the very helpful and friendly shop owners and citizens ensures that we will return to Strasbourg. We stayed at Hotel Gutenberg (right around the corner from Notre Dame) and very close to restaurants and shops.

One of the best places I have been to.

20 February 2024

One of the best places I have been to. Notre dame is a must visit. Take in the beauty of the canals and stroll by. There are boats plying on the canal. Don’t take them. Walk is the best. People are very friendly. Beer is good.
