Capitole
0.1 miles from city centre
The city’s historic core usually draws a religious crowd. Yet another kind of weekend worship also exists – shopping! Vintage vultures rummage stalls on Place du Capitole. High-street shoppers swear by Rue Saint-Rome. Place de la Bourse is divine for boho-chic threads. Even Saint Sernin Basilica’s plaza morphs into a Sunday flea market.

Compans
0.7 miles from city centre
Go al fresco in Compans. This leafy district is a picnicker’s paradise. Locals flock to the grassy banks of Canal du Midi with hampers in hand. This once-busy canal was an epic feat of 17th-century engineering, linking the Mediterranean and Atlantic. Today, it’s a placid waterway for gently pootling barges and rowing boats.

Matabiau

Live like a local. Varoom through the morning rush in this transport hub, and head for Marché Cristal. This rainbow of fruit stalls rambles along Boulevard de Strasbourg – it’s great for rustling up a DIY lunch. This city elegantly sits by the banks of River Garonne, inviting travellers to explore its pastel-hued streets and enjoy its laid-back atmosphere. Along with being a relaxing destination for a city break in France, Toulouse serves as the busy capital of the southern Occitanie region.
Classic terracotta bricks with a pinkish tinge define the city’s architecture, giving it the epithet of ‘La Ville Rose’ (The Pink City). On your Toulouse trip, visit the Romanesque-style Basilica of Saint-Sernin, the emblematic Capitole de Toulouse or the 16th-century Pont Neuf bridge that stretches over the Garonne. You can also cycle or walk along the UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi, a waterway that passes through the city and connects the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
To delve deeper into the natural and ethnological wealth of the region, you can drop by the Muséum de Toulouse. If you’d like to acquaint yourself with some of the masterpieces of French artistry, explore Musée des Augustins – a fine arts museum housing paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. You can also surround yourself with contemporary artworks and inspiring installations at the Les Abattoirs museum on your visit to Toulouse.

It is so easy to get around.
9 April 2024
It is so easy to get around. As expected, it feels more like a "real life city" than the craziness of Paris. More French people than tourists from 'all over'. It was busy in the shopping areas and restaurants, but it did not feel over-crowded.

Toulouse is a large and very vibrant city, with plenty of art, architecture, history, and music. We go for the opera, and I have not taken an opportunity to explore beyond the Place du Capitole. Driving can be difficult because of one-way streets at crazy angles, and the GPS is never up to date as roads are closed and directions are changed.

When going out from the hotel I had the feeling I was already in someone else’s way like a pedestrian or even a car. At the same time , I was next to a restaurant table and trash containers. Beware of dog poo everywhere. Overall I found this city to be quite dirty and not taken care of properly. The things I liked were the historical places like the convent, the churches and the capitole. It is also nice to see small businesses supporting local artists and artisans.

Beautiful city with old architecture, especially in the old center. Very lively in the evening, especially considering the number of students who work and live in the city. Central to South-West France, there is a very large choice of very good restaurants for all budgets.

Beautiful city - lovely historic buildings and the river and canal walks were excellent. Great selection of places to eat and drink and the city citizens were friendly and welcoming. Was great to see how many people used non fossil fuel forms of transportation and the public transport was super efficient and inexpensive

Saturday night in Toulouse is a tense and lively experience. A lot of police, people are tense. The next time we come to Toulouse we'll take a taxi to our restaurant in the evening. Sunday morning in the market was great.
