About Manchester

Including tips for the best time to visit Manchester

Manchester, the third largest city in England, is rooted in industry and expressionism. It was here where the Industrial Revolution began and where many of the UK’s most revered musical talents were born.

Today, this spirit lives on in a thriving media industry and an array of fascinating museums. Visit the Museum of Science and Industry to get some perspective on the city’s industrial past and scientific achievements, or delve into the city's sporting history at the National Football Museum, which features exhibitions on the past and present day.

Those who want to catch a game should head straight for Old Trafford, home of the country’s biggest football club, Manchester United. If tickets aren’t available, be sure to take a stadium tour, or catch a game at the home ground of their rivals, Manchester City.

Manchester is also renowned for its nightlife and music culture. For a memorable night out, head to the bars and clubs of Oxford Road or the Northern Quarter to hear indie anthems and dance classics by the likes of Oasis and The Smiths – two of Manchester’s finest rock ‘n’ roll exports.

The city is well connected by trams, buses and trains to Manchester Piccadilly, the central train station.

Lots to see and do - I was only there for three nights and wish it could have been more. Trafford Centre is great as is the city centre for shopping and the whole local is really easy to get around on the trams. The people I interacted with were lovely - helpful and very friendly.

We visited as I was doing Manchester Marathon. We did a little shopping and went to a couple of restaurants whilst we were there. The people of Manchester at our hotel, in the places we visited and during the Marathon were all very friendly and we would definitely visit again!

The people were so lovely. Friendly doesn’t describe them. We were welcomed everywhere from hotel to attractions. We did the best walking tour we ever did of any city. Our guide Chris was so knowledgeable and passionate about his job.

My home city, so a little biased.

10 April 2024

My home city, so a little biased. An excellent modern city with a great mix of new and old architecture. As it’s a relatively small city, it’s easy to navigate and offers all the big name shops. An abundance of nightlife with a great choice of restaurants and bars. Something for everyone

I wouldn't say that Manchester is full of must see iconic buildings etc, but it has enough to make it interesting. The mix of ancient and modern co-existing gives the place an air of perpetual progression. Definitely a city that is proud of it's past (warts and all), but with a very positive vision for the future. Impressive!

What a city! We loved every second of our trip, the Manchester United Stadium tour was truly inspiring and the restaurants and sights were great. We could not have met more friendly, welcoming people.
