About Chania Town

Including tips for the best time to visit Chania Town

Located on the Greek Island of Crete, Chania Town is recognised for its 14th century Venetian Harbour and proximity to the picturesque azores of the Mediterranean Sea. During your time in the city, spend your days wandering around the marina on foot to scope out delicious restaurants, harbour views and the Lighthouse of Chania, which dates back to the 1500s. Alternatively, the city's archaeology museum offers a detailed look into the region's past.

Chania is also home to some of Greece’s best beaches. Suited to both couples or families with children, Balos Beach features a sheltered lagoon with calm waters and white sands. Elsewhere, parasol and watersports are always available at Elafonissi, Falassarna, Frangokastello, Georgioupolis, Agia Marina, Agioi Apostoloi or the Golden Beach.

Chania Town’s medieval alleyways are where you’ll find some of Crete’s best restaurants, offering views of the Old Venetian Harbour and sunsets across the Mediterranean Sea. One of the region’s stand out restaurants is the Well of the Turk – a historic venue serving a Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine of slow-cooked meats made with organic extra virgin olive oil and a selection of herbs and spices from around the world. It’s here, where you’ll also be able to sample some Greek cheesecake. Afterwards, take a walk around the harbour among other holidaymakers and if you’re still peckish, take advantage of one of the many street food vendors selling souvlaki and gyros.

We loved the Venetian port and the Old Town.

We loved the Venetian port and the Old Town. One of our favourite places was a restaurant called Paradisiaco in the upper part of the port on Theotokopoulou Street. It is a very interesting neighbourhood. A beautiful art shop with a friendly owner is in the same area. Another good restaurant is Maridaki in Maridaki Steet.

Its a quiet, mountainside/seaside town with amazing food. I dont think I had one bad meal there. The beaches are amazing and the water is a crystal clear green/blue. I'm sure there are lots of activities and things to do involving hiking and snorkeling. If you're looking for lots of shopping from big retail, I dont think this is the place for you. A lot of the shops are local businesses.

A very good place as a base for the western part of the island. When visiting the eastern or central part, it is better to move around. However, the western part is famous for its greatest attractions.

This was our third stay in Chania as we love it so much.

30 October 2023

This was our third stay in Chania as we love it so much. It is clean and well-kept, with a pretty harbour and large selection of bars and restaurants. We always visit in April or October when it’s buzzing but not too overcrowded. The prices are very reasonable, especially in the Kuom Kapi area. We discovered Amphora taverna in the Venetian harbour this visit, and although you pay harbour front (slightly higher) prices, the portions were huge and excellent value for money, and the service was excellent.

You don’t need much time in the town, it is beautiful but touristy. However a great base to visit the western part of the island. Definitely drive from north to south via the mountains and olive groves. So beautiful

Lovely old town and harbour with restaurants all the way along. Makes sense to eat off the harbour front as it’s less expensive. Plenty of boat trips ranging from one hour to several. There is a good beach which was a good 40 minute walk for us but no problem. Costs 10 euros a day for 2 beds, umbrella and table. Hop on hop off bus was a good way to spend a day, Souda was interesting.
