One big open-air museum. This area is a magpie’s nest of brickwork that stretches back to Roman times. Smartphone-toting teens giggle next to 4th-century ruins, and old timers chat beneath the Cathedral’s 13th-century bell tower. Ogle Roman splendour at Diocletian’s Palace before eating in one of Varoš’s traditional “konoba” (taverns).

Splash! With soft sand and extensive shallows, Bačvice Beach is a beloved bathing spot for Splićani. It was in these shallows that the game “picigin” was born. Look out for bronzed chaps flinging themselves at a ball. Applaud their swallow dives before swallowing an icy drink at Café Bar Žbirac. Cap the day off with a boogie in Tropic Club.

Beachside livin’. Žnjan’s turquoise waters are a big hit with sun-seeking holidaymakers. In the shade of rows of hotels, they unfurl their colourful towels and soak up the Dalmatian rays. Offering a pleasant mix of beaches, ancient landmarks and lively restaurants and bars, Split is a historical city located on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.
One of the top places to visit in Split is Diocletian's Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that consists of the eponymous Roman emperor’s residence and garrison lodging structures. Located nearby are Saint Domnius Cathedral and Jupiter's Temple that were built in the third century CE. While in the area, consider visiting other historical highlights like the Golden, Iron, Silver and Bronze Gates. You can also stop at the Archaeological Museum, Ethnographic Museum and Mestrovic Gallery for insights into the city’s illustrious past.
Located along the Adriatic Sea, Split has a range of beaches to suit every type of traveller – from family-friendly sandy coves to pebbly stretches with a vibrant nightlife scene. At Bačvice Beach, you can splash about in the shallow sea or stroll along the concrete promenade lined with cafés. Those looking to go swimming will find the clear waters of Kupalište Bene very appealing. The picturesque beaches of Kašjuni and Firule are ideal for unwinding and soaking up the sun.
Split serves as a great base for island-hopping tours and day trips to Croatia’s famous nature reserves – Krka National Park and Plitvice Lakes National Park. Several popular islands like Hvar, Brač and Vis are also just a short boat ride away. Within the city limits, there’s Marjan, a scenic forest-park that offers views over the city, sea and islands.

We travelled to Split in December in low season so did not have lots of tourists around at this time and made it easy to see attractions. Rented a car and went to Plitvice National Park, Klis Fortress, Salona ancient village, the village of Vid where an ancient roman museum is of Roman Emperor Alexander the Great is located, and to Trogir and the Ciovino Island adjacent to Trogir. Xmas lights and festivities were happening all round the Old City. Had some great weather to enjoy these wonderful sites. Not many guided tours were available at this time so a rented car was very useful, and street parking was relatively easy to find because of low season. Any paid parking was 20-25 Euro per day, so happy to avoid that.

Split was an amazing place, great restaurants and a very interesting old town. We loved staying near the port with a great view, there was a lot of activity to sit and watch, cruise ships and ferries come and go. It was perfect. Split is a very walkable cit’s and there opportunities to visit the beautiful islands from there.

Beautiful seaside resort steeped in ancient history. In 5 days, we took a rickshaw ride to get started; walked through Diocletian Palace and Riva; enjoyed horseback ride at Podstrana; ziplining at Mt. Kozjak; and half-day speedboat ride to 3 islands including Trogir. Also took a half-day road trip to Krka National Park. Ate at restaurants along the Riva - al good. Look for free parking on street or low priced in public parking lots.

Wonderful location especially for small kids as the pedestrian zone offers lots for safe exploration. Good food especially once you get off the Riva waterfront to side areas with local restaurants and fresh seafood. Stay away from the cruise ship focused promenade as its 'ok' food and also quite a bit pricier for what you get. For kids, the Zoo (petting Zoo really) and the Maritime museum were big highlights.
