About Budapest

Including tips for the best time to visit Budapest

It’s hard not to fall completely in love with Budapest, a city in which you’re never short on things to do. Take in the eclectic architecture, revitalise your body in the thermal baths, devour bowls of goulash, or party all night at one of its so-called ‘ruin bars’.

The 500-metre wide Danube River splits the city into two halves: Buda and Pest. You can take a boat tour to see the landmark-lined riverbanks up close, or cross one of the eight bridges for a panoramic view. An amble along the Chain Bridge will bring you to the grounds of Buda Castle, a huge baroque-style complex dating back to the 13th century. Walk or take the short funicular ride to the top of Castle Hill, where you’ll be able to spot historic monuments like the Hungarian Parliament Building and St. Stephen’s Basilica, a huge domed church that dazzles when illuminated at night.

After all that walking, a dip in one of Budapest’s thermal baths is the perfect way to recharge. Choose between Széchenyi Baths and Géllert Spa – both feature indoor and outdoor pools of varying temperatures, with massage services available.

No trip to the capital of Hungary would be complete without experiencing its lively nightlife and exceptional food. You can find all the best bars and restaurants in District VII, the city’s old Jewish Quarter, where the revelry continues long into the night.

This is my 4th visit in 2 years it’s a fantastic city with so much to see and do. The public transport is excellent and the architecture is magnificent you could spend days just wandering around on foot and stopping for coffee food or beee etc as required. The people are helpful and lovely. It’s also a great base to visit other nearby places from. I’ve taken side trips to Belgrade, Bratislava, Vienna and Ljubljana using Flix bus or train. Final tip avoid tourist traps by veering into a side street and you will find prices much more affordable Example walk west on Jokai Ucta off Andrassy or walk down O Ucta that runs parallel with Andrassy

Beautiful city, reminded me of Vienna. Lots to see on bith sides of the river 'Buda' and 'Pest', museums, palaces, large squares, riverside walks, vintage tram rides, open air thermal baths, island in the river, shopping, nighlife...etc etc...Budapest has it all!

I liked the churches best, for more than religious experiences, but the opera was also a religious experience, even before the performance. Music also heightened ecclesiastical visits. The whole city was good for my soul. It was on my bucket list, but I haven't crossed it off. I'm flying back again soon. Already booked.

Beautiful city.

25 March 2024

Beautiful city. Very clean. Excellent for strolling around, enjoying the views, sitting at cafes, eating in restaurants and catching a show at the opera. A tip about shows at the opera... they offer same day tickets (not sure if it is only the standing ones) one hour before the day time shows and 2 hours before the night shows. Watched an opera for 4 euros for a standing seat! Which was cheaper than paying to see the building itself!

Probably the most beautiful city in Europe, where you can really understand what does it mean european charm. If you want to see Paris, Rome, Barcelona but you have not opportunities - you have to go here, and feel everything in one place. Wonderful - is the best word for characteristic.
