About Udaipur

Including tips for the best time to visit Udaipur

Udaipur served as the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar for almost 400 years until India’s independence. The city is located on the gentle slopes of the Aravalli Range and features a series of lakes that give it its nickname, ‘City of Lakes’.

Rooted in Rajasthani tradition, Udaipur showcases old world charm with its ancient monuments, winding streets and palatial structures. The lakeside City Palace comprises several palaces built by kings over the centuries. Here, you’ll be able to glimpse Rajput and Mughal architecture in its triple-arched gate, decorated balconies and sprawling courtyards. The palace complex is also home to a museum and the intricately carved Jagdish Temple. The hilltop Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace is also worth a visit for unbeatable views over the city, its lakes and the surrounding slopes.

Udaipur is known for its serene lakes, and you can take a boat ride on Lake Pichola to admire some of the city’s former palaces converted into luxurious hotels. Right in the middle of the lake, on its own little island, is the gleaming Taj Lake Palace, and on the banks you’ll find the Oberoi Udaivilas – once ranked as the number one hotel in the world. On another island lies Jag Mandir, a 17th-century palace that now houses an upscale restaurant, a museum and a spa. You can also spend some time in Udaipur’s beautiful gardens, the most famous of which is Saheliyon ki Bari – home to carved fountains, marble elephants and lotus pools.

Amazing city, must visit, beautiful palaces and hotels to explore. Great food options, Ambrai ghat is a great place to hangout in the evenings. Vibrant place. City Palace looks imposing along Fatehsagar lake at night.

6 February 2024

We travelled to Udaipur in end of January which was the perfect season but it happened to be the loooong weekend so too much crowd. Better to avoid such times. The lanes in old city are super narrow, so avoid taking the car in the lanes. best way is to walk or to take auto rickshaw up to one point and then walk around. Auto guys are super cool! They drive like James Bond:-) Most of the good restaurants are lake side. Ambrai is one of the best! Awesome view, Awesome staff, awesome food!! Do visit Artist Art shop outside Trident Hotel. They have amazing silver jewelry and other stuff like shawls, dresses, arty bags as well! 15 A.D. Cafe/ Bakery sales delicious cookies! Its a veg cafe but the food was surprisingly tasty!! A must visit place!

Udaipur, city of lakes is very charming and peaceful.

31 January 2024

Udaipur, city of lakes is very charming and peaceful. Though the city is as busy as it could be in India but still less crowded and with a feeling of peace. Lakes views are great and many things to visit. And great place to buy beautiful sarees and sherwanis.

The most overriding factor was that I was lied to.

10 January 2024

The most overriding factor was that I was lied to. And the total lack of interest to solve a really simple issue. Once they had my money that was it . Just “ yes sir “ “ we will look in to it sir” just lies to deflect me.
