Nestled under the stunning Bergamo Alps in Italy’s Lombardy region, Bergamo is the perfect place for an enchanting getaway. Here you’ll find architectural treasures, medieval walls and the finest Italian art that will keep you coming back for more.
Bergamo is dotted with architectural beauties. The church and mausoleum Cappella Colleoni is a triumph that blends Renaissance and baroque features with a colorful design. Plus, you can even follow biblical scenes on its marble facade. Elsewhere, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore stands strong as a Romanesque relic and features a golden interior that must be seen to be believed.
There are plenty of things to see and do in Bergamo. The walk along the historic, UNESCO-listed Venetian Walls is a great introduction to the city. Built in the 16th-century, they enclose the charming Upper Town with a fairytale-like charm. Afterwards, you can rest in the Orto Botanico di Bergamo – a botanical garden filled with local flora of Lombardy as well as lush green spaces and scenic views.
Culture lovers will find much to love in Bergamo. The city is home to the Accademia Carrara, one of Italy’s oldest art academies as well as a fantastic art gallery. Here, you can dive into a huge collection of paintings by Italian artists such as Raphael, Bellini and Botticelli.

The old town is filled with places to eat and things to do. If you enjoy walking and sightseeing Bergamo is the place to go. Easy access to and from the airport made the trip so relaxing. We tried La Vita and several of the other restaurants up the hill they were all excellent.
Beautiful town, especially Alta.

Beautiful town, especially Alta. We found this location great for using public transport. We took the train to Milan on one day and a train to Lake Garda another day. The people are friendly and lots of choice for food and drinks.

Although I have been to Bergamo 24 years ago, I don't remember it being so beautiful and interesting. The Architecture is amazing, with beautiful, grand buildings almost everywhere you look in the city centre and so clean and attended to. Wonderful variety of cafes and restaurants along the main street, with a very effective, regular bus timetable which we used every day to get to and from Citta Alta where we stayed. The train station had regular trains that took us to Milan 45 minutes away and also to the mountains and lakes. Bergamo Citta Alta is also beautiful with many buses going to and fro every 10 / 15 minutes from the city. Food and service in both areas are really very good and although the staff appreciated my Italian attempts, most spoke English. Food and travel were also good value. Recommend train ride to Varenna on Lake Como, absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to go to Bergamo again.

It may just have been the time of year we went (April) but very few restaurants in our immediate area stayed open late. We arrived at one at 9.20pm to be told that they were shortly closing the kitchen! By the time we got to another we were told we would have to chose quickly what we wanted to eat as they were closing soon. So we felt quite rushed to choose and eat. We ate at Vox restaurant on 2 nights which was very nice and they stayed open late. The nearest supermarket advertised as closing at 9pm but would not let us in for just one item at 8.45pm! The area was ideal to use as a base to visit other areas; Milan, Lake Garda and Lake Como and also nearby Verona Citta alta was lovely though although we only went there in the daytime so can't comment on places to eat an evening meal.

Beautiful new town with many shops and cafes. And a very interesting old town with 12th-13th century architecture, narrow streets and beautiful churches. It sits on a high hill and has stunning views of the new town. There are plenty of cafes and pizzerias where you can try delicious pizza and eat a delicious cake.
