About Verona

Including tips for the best time to visit Verona

A favourite of Shakespeare, beautiful Verona is the literary home of Romeo and Juliet. The medieval families of Montague and Capulet immortalised in the play did actually exist, and some buildings pertaining to them are still present. Among these is the place claiming to have been Juliet's house – not strictly true, but it’s still worth stepping out onto its pretty balcony.

But Verona is much more than the setting of a tragic love story. It’s also home to one of Italy’s best-preserved Roman amphitheatres: Arena di Verona. Dating back to the first century CE, this open-air space used to host festivals and gladiator battles. Today, it’s used exclusively for classic operas and pop music concerts, with stars such as Adele and Paul McCartney having graced its stage.

In Piazza delle Erbe, you’ll find more of the city’s sumptuous architecture, like the 12th-century Torre dei Lamberti bell tower, alongside vibrant cafés and a daily market that sells produce from around the province of Verona. Find a quiet corner and enjoy an espresso or glass of Veneto wine, before following the Adige River to the Museo di Castelvecchio, which houses paintings, sculptures and military weapons from the Middle Ages.

All this is just a 30-minute train journey from the stunning Lake Garda. To reach it, just head to Verona Porta Nuova station and jump on the train to Desenzano, where you can take a short bus ride to the lake.

If like me , you are covering a number of destinations over a short period of time, then a day in Verona is enough unless you have specific things in mind which require more time. Of course if you just want to just chill out and take it easy, then Verona is your destination! It is a slow and dreamy city and has something to offer everyone, be it sightseeing, food or shopping. As a vegetarian, my favourite place to eat was Ravioleria Ging Castelvechhio at Corso Castelvecchio 3, Verona. Their vegetarian bao buns were freshly made, piping hot and very delicious! Excellent value for money!

We went to Verona in early March and liked the fact it wasn't crazy crowded. It's a beautiful city with lots of hidden gems. I was only able to spend one night but 2 or 3 would have been better.

Obviously very popular with tourists but for us it was not about doing the usual tourist things but just walking the streets, finding places to eat away from the main tourist hub and just taking in the atmosphere of the place...its really a great place to just hangout!

Verona is a beautiful Italian city.

19 March 2024

Verona is a beautiful Italian city. This was my second trip and I fell in love with it all over again. It is quite small, so two to three days would be perfect. We stayed right in the heart of the old town, on Via Leoncino, which is a short walk from the delightful Piazza Bra and the Arena. Almost everything is within walking distance, and I particularly loved sitting at one of the many outdoor cafes in Piazza Bra with my aperitivo, just watching the world go by! The city is full of wonderful cafes and restaurants - the problem is 'which one to choose' but one of our top recommendations is La Taverna Di Via Stella (on Via Stella), a short walk from another delightful square, Piazza delle Erbe, where we had a wonderful meal on our last night in Verona.

A wonderful city to visit.

18 March 2024

A wonderful city to visit. I loved the pedestrianized old town nestled in the bend of the river. So much to see and wonder at on foot - the architecture, the extraordinary Piazza Erbe, the silent duomo, the river and museums, and the stunning Roman arena. The only waste of time was Juliet's balcony, though I think we have to be impressed by the skill in having taken something fictional and turning it into a very successful tourist goldmine! It was my first time in Verona and I loved it. Not as overwhelming as the "big 3" (Rome, Florence, Venice). Though humming in the daytime, it was relatively quiet at night and very navigable and safe - which was important for this solo female traveller.

Super stunning city.

10 March 2024

Super stunning city. I came as a solo traveller (29F) and felt very safe. It’s a romantic city but not as overtly as I feared which was nice. Sadly it rained a lot while I was there - Verona isn’t great for rainy days as there’s so much to see from walking but I still had a good time. Shopping was surprisingly great there - better than shopping in London. Just a nicer experience. As with everywhere in Italy, everywhere you look it’s pretty. Every street and building. Again v different to London lol. People weren’t keen to speak to me in Italian. I don’t blame them, my Italian is terrible but they could have humoured me for like ten seconds Will def come back - but not in Feb. This isn’t somewhere to go for crazy nights out but it’s so well connected by train - Venice, Florence, Milan… even Rome in three hours. Can imagine it’s beaut in the summer.
