Japan’s second most populous city, Yokohama, is located just a 45-minute train journey from the capital. As one of the nation’s prominent economic centres, the city mixes modern architecture and shopping with historical temples and picturesque waterfront scenery.
During your time in Yokohama, you’ll find its theme parks are just as present as its historical monuments. Minato Minara or Cosmo World, located in the former industrial district, offer exhilarating roller coasters, buzzing family-friendly restaurants, the Yokohama Museum of Art and Shinko Island. Alternatively, some of Yokohama’s best nature can be found at Yamashita Park or the botanical gardens of Sankei-en – the location of a 15th century Japanese pagoda.
As the home of Japan’s largest Chinatown, Yokohama is the best location to sample traditional Japanese dishes like Gyunabe, while many restaurants serve fresh sushi and tempura. For something a little more offbeat, head to the Noodle Cup Museum to design your own ramen cup or explore the Yokohama Ramen Museum to visit the world’s only food-themed amusement park.
Following the end of Japan’s isolationist policy in the 1800s, Yokohama was transformed from a small fishing village into the city we know today. Now, one of Japan’s largest administrative zones, the city's Kannai business district was formerly a moated island before its development in the 15th century. Today, western influence can be felt across Yokohama's music, fashion and art worlds, while the city was first recognised on a global scale after hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup final.

Yokohama is a nice place to travel and explore.
23 April 2024
Yokohama is a nice place to travel and explore. It is smaller than the big neighbour Tokyo but this gives it its charm. Great places are Yokohama station, Minato Mirai, Sakuragicho and Shinko. In Sakuragicho you can take the cable car to Shinko which is a great area to walk around, eat, drink and shop. The Red Brick warehouse is also situated there, where they host events all year round and you can find unique souvenir shops and restaurants. Yokohama station at first it may feel crowded but the moment you get out of the station things relax. Inside the station itself you can find many shopping opportunities and lots of good restaurants with delicious food. Minato Mirai and Sakuragicho are fantastic places if you like walking by the sea, eat well, have a good cup of coffee and enjoy your time. The cup noodles museum is also located there which is definitely worth a visit to have some fun for an hour and create your own cup of noodles.

We stayed at the MinatoMirai which is walking distance to most of the attractions like the pier district, museums and Chinatown. Totally different from Tokyo, much more relaxed and the pier district was wonderful! There was also a yummy anchovy based ramen near the Yokohama Station .... can't remember what it was but it was yummy! So many attractions and interesting places to explore. Totally recommend a few days exploring Yokohama.

Yokohama is a city brimming with interesting places to visit, delicious food to sample, and history to learn. Not only that, but I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan, and no where else did I find such friendly people! My favorite bite was at Central Burger off the Ishikawacho stop. They serve an amazing American style smash burger that they’ve made completely their own. I had to leave the states to find a burger THAT GOOD. I was sorry to leave this great city.

Yokohama, a gem among the cities I've visited, truly encapsulates the essence of a modern yet culturally rich urban landscape. The city's charm lies not only in its stunning architecture and well-planned layout but also in the warmth and friendliness of its people, a trait synonymous with Japanese hospitality. Strolling through Yokohama, one cannot miss the iconic landmarks that define its skyline – the majestic Sail Training Ship Nippon Maru, a beacon of the city's maritime heritage, and the towering Ferris wheel that offers breathtaking views. The city is also a sanctuary for those seeking a blend of modernity and tradition, with its numerous temples and historical sites providing a tranquil escape. Every culinary experience here was a delight; the restaurants in Yokohama go above and beyond to offer exceptional service, ensuring each meal is not just about the exquisite Japanese cuisine but also about the overall dining experience. This harmonious blend of urban sophistication and cultural richness makes Yokohama an unforgettable destination.

A must see city during trip to Japan, esp when Gundam is still there. It's near Tokyo. The city is quite peaceful. You could walk around the seaside. Not to crowded. The pedestrian walk is huge. Awesome cities. They have China Town, you could find so many food restaurants, and shops.
