About Singapore

Including tips for the best time to visit Singapore

The tiny island city-state of Singapore packs a lot of diversity into its borders. Malay, Chinese, Indian and Arab commmunities have all left their mark on the city and have each brought their own distinct flavours to the mix.

If it’s your first time in Singapore, this fusion of cultures will keep you intrigued to no end. Go shopping for souvenirs in Chinatown, gather your thoughts at the four-storey Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, check out Little India’s statue-covered Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, and stop for some mint tea in the Arabic quarter – all in the space of a day.

Alternatively, take it slow and dedicate a full day to each neighbourhood. Kampong Glam’s maze of bazaars, flea markets and shisha bars shouldn’t be rushed, while Orchard Road is a good place to visit if shopping in luxury malls is high on your agenda.

Singapore is also a leading advocate for climate change. Its spectacular Gardens by The Bay – a huge area of reclaimed land near the Marina – are, quite literally, living proof. These unique green spaces, with their ‘supertrees’ and ‘cloud forests’, show how cities as densely populated as Singapore can be at one with nature.

Travelling to Singapore is very straightforward, with over 100 airlines serving Changi Airport. The best time to visit is in spring, when the greenery is in full bloom.

Singapore is a very clean location with a lot of things to do. Be mindful that Singapore is not cheap to travel from accomodation to meals. Activities like Universal Studios and the Mandai Wildlife Parks (Zoo, etc) are equally dear to access.

Mindblowing multicultular City.

Mindblowing multicultular City. Ideal for a short 2-3 days city break with many attractions and amazing sites. Easy to commute in the city and to / from the airport. Great for foodies with wide choice of asian cuisines in cafes, restaurants. Our favourite was street food as there is a large number of food markets with great prices, they also give you an easy way to try some of the local and authentic dishes. Very safe city for travellers of all kinds. People of Singapore are generally very friendly, offering help on the street when we got a bit lost. Drawbacks? Singapore is insanely expensive. Get ready to spend lot of bucks on accommodation, drinks, even a bottle of water is above the average European prices. Some attractions are also not cheap however some key ones eg. Marina Gardens are free. For outdoor attractions we would recommend to see them late afternoon / evenings when the heat is a bit off and they look more spectacular during the night with all lights on!

Outstanding city, high tech and incredibly clean. The MRT and bus services are second to none. The Hawker centres were very clean and offered plenty of options for food. There was plenty to see and do as a visitor and one should stay a minimum of 7 days if coming for the first time. Changi airport (and the Jewel) has enough to keep you occupied for the full day.

People were friendly and helpful. Singapore felt safe. Lots of food choices for every budget. Loved Lavo Italian restaurant on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands. Singapore was clean and easy to get around. We had 4.5 days in Singapore and a 0.5 day to visit the Jewel and shopping at Changi airport.

Singapore used to have more diversity of restaurants and the shop vendors more engaging. There now seems to be a shift towards mostly Asian restaurants which isn’t to all western tastes. Costs are too high making it less attractive. Sentosa was looking run down especially the Universal studios lot. Faded paint, flat tyres on classics cars from Mel’s diner and no Hamburgers in the restaurant. Yes, Mel’s hamburger restaurant does not serve hamburgers???
