Surrounded by the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish town of Peñíscola is a fortified seaport in the Castellón province. This attractive destination is a well-liked tourist resort thanks to its unique position on a rock and the gorgeous beaches.
Home to an iconic lighthouse and an impressive old town, the historic medieval city of Peñíscola will amaze you with its unique beauty and variety of outdoor activities. Apart from historical sites, it features wonderful beaches like Basseta Beach, the pebbled Argilaga Cove and the sandy Norte Beach.
Situated on the highest point of the city, the Castle used to be the residence of Pope Benedict XIII. The filming location of the epic movie ‘El Cid’, Peñíscola is about 145 km from the city of Valencia. The fort has three different entrances, built during different periods from the 15th-century until 1754.
Travellers can walk along the promenade area, wander around the green botanic park with the palm trees or visit a restaurant to savour local fish stew and shellfish. Booking.com will help you choose from a variety of hotels, apartments, guest houses and campsites in Peñíscola and the nearby cities of Alcossebre, Benicarló and Vinarós.
We really enjoyed our two day stay. We walked around each of the areas and visited the castle and church. We thought the castle was an excellent experience - it is huge and very well maintained and excellent value for money. We were half board in our hotel but there are better places to eat out. We had a tasty lunch right by the sea. All staff were friendly smiley and helpful. We loved it.

We totally fell in love with Peñiscola, it has such a lovely feel to it, very friendly, great beaches. We ate in a pizzeria on the sea front, great views. It’s easy to walk to the castle area, where you’ll also find lots of little local shops for your souvenirs, a treasure trove of discovery

The old town is great for spending a few days in - Book one...
The old town is great for spending a few days in - Book one of the top two rooms at Dios Esta Bien B&B as then you have a great place in the old town from which to explore with great food & hosts, as well as being able to get away from the crowds by retreating to your own private terrace which then gives you access to the roof terrace. The hostel does not have a lift, but on the plus side, it avoids walking up and down the hill if you are not staying in the old town. The rest of Peñíscola is a big and well laid out resort - We were fortunate to be there just before Easter when it was quieter, but it does get very busy during the holiday season, so pick your time if only spending a few days here. The food and drinks at the B&B are very good and we can highly recommend the restaurant La Taverneta de Sant Roc just down the same street - their T-bone steak was amazing and they were charming hosts. Personally, the whole resort is a bit too big for us when considering a holiday, but everyone should visit and spend a few days in the old town - it’s got a real buzz and vibe about it, and best time to go would be before and after main summer holiday season unless you like crowds

I most liked visiting the castle and the old town...
I most liked visiting the castle and the old town surrounding the castle. This is well worth a visit. The town has great beaches, but there are many shops and restaurants closed during the wintertime.

Absolute waste of money.
Absolute waste of money. Run down accommodation, no parking g in town, very touristy, and full of people with selfie sticks. The castle although huge has nothing specifically interesting except the views.

definitely a place worth a visit, the old town and castle...
definitely a place worth a visit, the old town and castle are a must (probably not good if you have mobility issues). We visited in December and the town was decorated for Christmas, really nice (and busy). we stayed for 3 nights but used Peniscola as a base to visit Morella. We think 2 days is more than enough if you don't want the beach, however if it is the beach you want then Pensicola is perfect.
There are a multitude of restaurants to choose from and seafood is a speciality.
Loved it.
We spent in the apartment a month (april-may) with a baby 1yo. Generally very happy. Huge terrace, equipped kitchen, AC in living room only, private parking place, swimming pool. Very close to nice beach, caffee and great bakery around the corner. Bus stop to peniscola/benicarlo 5mins (1.25e), walking 1:10 to peniscola or 40m to benicarlo. Agency was very helpful, they sent somebody to check washing machine same day.
Great small, older, no frills, local hotel. On the beach. Get a room with a balcony, absolutely worth it. Check in and out was easy...Gracias Pablo! Parking outside. Breakfast on the roof top, "Perfecto"! The best thing is the castle (GOT), out the door to the right, and the olde town. To the left is typical Spain Tourist Hell. Kilometers of developed hi rise condos on the beach.
Nice feel to the hotel and enjoyed working with the younger front desk agent...welcoming and helpful.
Room assignment received per our request. Thank you!
Excellent breakfast
Parking next to property and above ground
Great view of the fortress...which is at least one mile away
Would return to hotel if ever in Pensicola. Especially for the breakfast
Right in the middle of the old town.Tiny balcony but a view of the castle.Peniscola is a lovely town great beach 5 km long. Not very busy as low season. Not sure what it will be like in peak season.Loys of small cobbled streets. You can easily get lost.Castle was closed from the 8th till the 21st of april still nice to walk around it.
It was a beautiful hotel…lots of flowers, beautifully kept…nice pool area with seating area in the shade and an outdoor bar out there also. There was much attention to detail in the whole place. .kind of rustic and we loved it!
Many restaurants within walking distance and the beach was right across the road.
New property that just opened in Easter 2023! The location in the Old Town across from the Peñiscola Castle is unbeatable. Everything you could possibly need for a memorable stay in this gem on the Alzahar Coast is only footsteps away. ¡Gracias para todo!
Convenient. Parking very good with a large car park facing the hotel. Staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble. Near the promenade and the boardwalk through the marshes. Peniscola is a lovely place to visit and the castle and old town are a must.
Location in front of the sea in the old part of Peniscola. Close to the beach (5 minutes walking). Good breakfast served in the other hotel nearby with amazing view on the sea. Very helpful staff.
This is not a traditional chain-style hotel, it's a quaint Spanish gem located right as you enter the old city gates. The hosts are exceptionally nice and the rooms are spotlessly clean.
Great location, right on the beach, within short walk to the old town and fortress. Parking is right across the street from the hotel. Clean hotel with attentive, friendly service.
Staff was very helpful and polite, the room was very spacious and the pool was the best part it has an amazing pool, the beach in front of the hotel is also nice.
