The property also provides free pick-up service from JR Takayama Station. Tai was so wonderful, he helped us look for day trips, restaurants and took us again and again to the city. We felt so at home with Tai and his mother welcoming us and constantly giving us little sweets and tips for Japan. Would love to come back again.

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. The property offers free WiFi access in rooms and in public areas including the shared TV lounge and the terrace. The food and service were both amazing! Thank you so much. We had an amazing stay. One of the very few places we will come back to after 33 days in Japan

Rooms are fitted with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and traditional futon bedding. A low table and a TV with satellite channels are provided. Guests can relax in the room with free green tea. Such a sweet Ryokan in Takayama! We stayed here for one night and loved the experience. At the check-in we were greeted by the lovely couple who runs the place. Despite speaking little English they communicated with us with kindness and were very welcoming. The room feels authentic and traditional, with a small balcony and a view to the small river nearby. The room was clean and quiet and we had a private toilet. The Onsen was definitely a highlight. We had it all to ourselves and loved the experience. Breakfast was early but good too (we chose the continental breakfast instead of the Japanese breakfast). Overall, it is a wonderful place, definitely recommended!

Located in the centre of Takayama Historic District, Ryokan Tanabe is one of the most historical ryokans in the city. It features Japanese-style rooms and free WiFi in all areas. Guests can request relaxing massage treatments or soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, which are made of rocks and cypress wood. It was a great Ryokan experience for my wife and I. Food was fantastic as well as service. The place is very well located. It has a real traditional vibe bit at the same time is western friendly. The Ryokan has onsen (shared bathroom) but you also can have a bath in your room.

Located in the historical town of Magome, Tajimaya features Japanese-style accommodations in a 110-year old building. Each room features a flat-screen TV, and guests can relax in the public bath. The property lies in front of a traditional stone-paved street, and is a 5-minute walk from the Magome Bus Stop. Free Wi-Fi is available in the public areas. Tajimaya has been the highlight stay of our trip. I don't know what else to say other than it was perfect. Stay here if you can.
