San Pedro is a bustling tourist town. The most common transportation on the streets is golf carts, many, many golf carts. The Blue Water Grill was our favorite place to eat. We also enjoyed Lily's Treasure chest for a few meals. It was great to stay here for a few nights for the dining and the activities - snorkeling excursions - but we are glad we also spent time on the mainland coast of Belize for a more laid back experience.
San Pedro was a busy little city on the island of Caye Ambergris. The beach featured restaurants, bars, hotels and resorts all along. There were many choices for restaurants, so we were able to try several different ones. Many of them featured fresh fish and seafood, barbecue, and tropical drinks. We mostly got around on foot--up and down the beach and along the town's streets, but rented a golf cart one day to go to Secret Beach a few miles away. Sidewalks are few, so you have to watch out for traffic, which is mostly golf carts, the favorite mode of transportation. The few vehicles were mostly mini-van taxis and a few pickups. We stayed in the central part of the town, so everything we needed was quite handy. Markets and bakeries were nearby. We had fresh papaya for breakfast nearly every morning! Next time we might stay in a little quieter part of town, say, at one of the beachfront resorts.
This was our second time visiting San Pedro, so much to do & see we will be going back soon! Everyone is friendly & kind. At no time walking around did we feel unsafe. Se did a Sailboat Sunset Cruise that did not disappoint.
Roadside meals are affordable and delicious. Enjoy barbecued chicken, rice and beans, coleslaw! Had an amazing massage on the pier behind Xanadu(?) resort. Found a Brooklyn bagel place that was yummy! Get a place like Caribe Island #12 outside of town with privacy. Charter a boat and beach hop, snorkel, etc. Go cave tubing. Felt like our own private beach at our place that was heaven.
San Pedro is a beautiful place. I come here once a year. The best thing about San Pedro is the locals. They make this beautiful place that much better. The food is absolutely amazing. When you think of food around the world Belize tends to not be on that list. IT SHOULD BE. The food is so amazing!
We try to spend five full days in San Pedro annually. For the first three trips, we rented a Golf Cart to see the far ends of the island. Now, we choose to stay downtown and walk to everything. SP is very safe, but don't leave anything in your cart. Meals can be pricy if you eat "non-local" foods - in other words, by eating at the smaller, less advertised venues, delicious, local food is very cheap! You can have a large meal for two at Neri's Tacos for under $10 US! El Fagon has the best ceviche we've ever had. It's a local restaurant with fairly low prices but get there before 6:30 PM unless you have reservations. The picture is of a Michelada served with a frozen beer. One appetizer of ceviche is a meal, so don't over-order! Red Ginger, Elvi's Kitchen, and Cool Beans have exceptional food and service but are non-local and expensive. The Palapa Bar is NOT WORTH IT! Embarrassingly, we've made the mistake of eating there twice - never again! The service is rude and surly. The food is very expensive and below-average. The entertainment is not good. We've stayed at Ramon's—excellent location, average food, no booze, but pricey; Xanadu, which is not very convenient and expensive; and Tradewinds Paradise Villas, which is reasonably priced and has an exceptional location. We liked Tradewinds Paradise Villas the best. It is within walking distance of everything downtown, has a beautiful pool with shade, and has outstanding management.
