This was our first visit since Irma. We were overjoyed with our renovated 2BR 2 Bath condo at the Simpson Bay Resort and we were greeted warmly and politely by everyone that we came in contact with during our 2 week stay. We cooked most of our meals in the full kitchen of our condo, doing our shopping at the Carrefour supermarket in Philipsburg. Remember to bring your coupon to get 5% off! Our big activity was a 3 night stay on the island of Saba! We took the Ferry thru Aqua Mania and it was great! Remember to take your drugs the nite before! Saba was an experience that I will never forget! We drove all around St Martin (both sides) to check out the places that we used to frequent. To be blunt- St Martin is still a long way from recovery. Simpson Bay was active with many shops open. Maho looked to be recovering nicely with the Casino doing reasonably well. I lost my limit within 1 hour and skipped out of there before serious damage was done to my budget. Grand Case was a mess! Marigot was a little better. The road to Orient Beach was upsetting and without any donkeys! The road to Oyster Bay was in better shape, but the Marina was gone! I mean gone, as in no longer there! I was too distressed at the sight of all the rubble along the road to enjoy the beaches at Galion and Dawn and the weather turned too stormy to fly or sail, so we cut our road trip short. I was happy to infuse a little income into their economy and I hope to return soon.. So should you! They need us!
I hadn't realized how much was destroyed in Hurricane Irma. There were only a handful of restaurants open and a few stores to shop in. However the beach was clean, and the water was blue. Everyone was friendly but it was difficult to walk to the restaurants because of so many cars driving so close to you down the street, and no sidewalks to walk safely. Definitely wouldn't have taken my 3 year old there had I known about the road conditions. On the positive side, the restaurants were so sweet to my daughter and made her the most delicious toddler plates. She ate every bite they served.
I liked : - Gastien (desk agent) he was Amazing. Helped us with everything and he's really funny. - The pool and room - Beaches less: - No wifi the first day - No water when we woke up - should have more propositions for the Breakfast. You need to keep the standing of a ⭐⭐⭐⭐
we have vacationed in SXM for 18 years-due to the problems of recovery after the hurricane we may need to find another paradise for awhile-recovery has been very slow-it's now almost 3 years after the storm and not much has changed -sadly-the islands only industry is tourism-they need to step up or they will loose visiters!
Make sure to visit Sunset Cafe at least once - the food is absolutely out of this world. Same with the local joints (Lolo’s) down the road! Great beaches, great food, good shopping, and everyone is super friendly. Can’t go wrong.
Even though there is still a lot of post-hurricane construction going on, the three beach bar/restaurants (KKO, Bikini Bar and I forgot the third) along with the restaurants and shops on Avenue Des Plages, are charming with good food and an International mix of families, couples and friends. The beach itself: the surf on this part of the island in the winter is a little bit rough, with riptides and decent waves for boogie boarding... not so great for snorkeling or lazing on a raft. There were lots of kite surfers and wave runners.
