Le Catalan, hotel in Cerbère

Le Catalan is a hotel located in Banyuls sur Mer, just 500 metres away from the marina, a 10-minute walk from the village centre and 5-minute from a seaside creek.

We first visited Banyuls nearly 50 years ago: and have visited many times since. It is a favourite part of France for us. We discovered Le Catalan about ten years ago and their position in Haut Banyuls is perfect. I had wanted to celebrate my birthday in style: and did! A view down over the small town and harbour, an exemplary meal prepared by a skilled chef. Thank you, Le Catalan. You delivered.

At presen Cerbere streets under under renovovation which made a bit difficult to find the property. However, once there we met de very cordial hosts who were bending over backward to make our stay memorable. To overcome the difficulties with the French strike we were even taken across the border to catch our train.

Cerbère is the last village in France before reaching the Spanish border - it is the quietest of the towns on this bit of coast, but there is easy access to the (much larger and busier) towns of Banyuls-sur-Mer and Collioure, either by car or via a short train or bus ride. You really don't need to a car to visit this coastline - the train station is a couple of hundred metres from the sea front, and there is a regular service to the other towns along the coast. Highly recommended for a quiet, low carbon holiday. The beaches are amazing: the water is crystal clear and there are a lot of fish! There is also lots of beautiful walking along the coast path.

This town doesn't have a nice atmosphere like the other towns at the coast. People don't greet you at the street but stare at you like you are unwelcome. There are a lot of broken cars parked in the streets, many people looking homeless on some of the streets. The people in the supermarkets are not really friendly and the place has this spooky atmosphere. I wouldn't make a detour for this place. The bakery in the town is probably the nicest place here, and you're close to the Spanish border and the coast.

No staff on site at night and for most of the day.

No staff on site at night and for most of the day. An asylum seeker knocked on the door on our first night there and I had to deal with a clearly desperate person. I felt bad turning him away. Staff smoking in the kitchen seemingly the standard practice as there was no attempt to hide it. On the first day, our room was not made up No kettle in the room so you have to walk to town for a refreshment. On the third day we were hassled by a drone being flown right up to the balcony and then up and down and side to side. It transpired to be a guest taking photographs. The views are stunning, the staff were pleasant, the bed was really comfortable and the shower is great.

Amazing views from hotel room overlooking very scenic bay. Rooms all seem to have balconies, beautiful spot from which to enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea, available 24/7 from the guest lounge, which leads out onto a large terrace with more seating and the lovely views. Wonderful coastline to explore. Beach and diving school in Cerbère and train station. Very well thought-out modern bathroom with sea views.
