We were the only guests; made very welcome and left to pic-nic in the dining room/kitchen. Wonderfully quirky decoration to bed room and bathroom.

Escapade de Vauclair, hotel in Pontavert

A recently renovated guest house situated in Bouconville-Vauclair, Escapade de Vauclair features a garden.

We were two tired and hungry pilgrims on the Via Francigena who arrived without food due to another French public holiday in May and a lack of shops in the area. We also had difficulty finding accommodation and Bouconville-Vauclair is not on the designated route. The hostess, Magali, was simply outstanding. She offered to prepare us an evening meal – which was magnificent, and this was followed with a superb breakfast the next morning. The accommodation can more correctly described as a newly constructed self-contained unit with all amenities you require. Magali turned our brief stay into one of the highlights of our entire walk. The rooms are incredibly small.

The rooms are incredibly small. They look much larger in the photos. The bed had a visible 'sinking' area near the head side. The corridor is loud when people are walking by. There were not enough towels provided and getting more was difficult due to language barrier. Parking was limited as there was a whole crew of workers staying at the property and we had to park offsite one night. The first night we were there we waited at the bar for 25 minutes trying to get a glass of wine, meanwhile multiple people walked by us without helping. One waiter even went into the bar, poured himself a whisky, and walked away without acknowledging us. The bar was also filthy with other drinks and used glasses. The next morning all the dishes from dinner the night before were still on the tables, and you have to walk through the dinner area to get to breakfast. Breakfast is fine, nothing special.
