Doune Braes Hotel, hotel in Carloway

The Doune Braes Hotel sits in the north-west of the Isle of Lewis. One of the 100 mile necklace of Islands in the Western Isles of Scotland.

I don’t think I’ve ever received a warmer welcome. Only booked for one night when I decided to travel a day early but could easily have stayed longer. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, especially the owner, who greeted me as I arrived. There was even a gift for my dog in the room. The room was lovely, looking out to the small loch. Food was home cooked and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

Taigh 24, Barvas, hotel in Carloway

Situated in Barvas and only 31 km from Callanish Standing Stones, Taigh 24, Barvas features accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. This holiday home provides a garden.

The hosts are very responsive to questions, and everything was well organised. You will need a car to reach it from Stornoway, and that is part of its charm. Do be sure to call into Tesco in Stornoway before going there as there are few places to buy food for breakfast (but there is tea and coffee at the house). The wifi connection is good, but away from the house you may not be able to get a phone connection (which stopped us from telling the owners we had checked out for a couple of hours) so do all your communication in the house over the wifi. There is a beautiful beach near the house and many more a short drive away.

We have visited the island yearly so we know a car is a must but haven’t previously stayed in Carloway; it’s a great, peaceful location for visiting local amenities such as the blackhouse village and excellent gallery as well as the Blue Pig Studio which sells handmade art and gifts and donkeys to visit! It is near to fantastic beaches such as Dalmore and Dalbeg and not too far from attractions around the rest of the island such as The Callanish Stones, Eoropie Playpark and beach and the town of Stornaway.
