First of all, all the staff from reception to housekeeping to the Vault bar are helpful and friendly, exactly what hospital really means. The Resolution Hotel is ideally placed in the old town, near the harbour and in the midst of interesting shops. There is a pay & display car park close by with reasonable 24 hour rates. The Vault bar and restaurant is excellent, both for a drink and for breakfast and dinner.
This charming family-run hotel has a great restaurant and a wonderful, peaceful location on Whitby’s West Cliff, near the seafront and within walking distance of the town centre.

The space has been renovated very well and it has everything you could possibly need. It was very nice to have 2 bathrooms which is unusual. It was particularly nice to sit outside on the bench at the front at the end of a very full day and listen to the trains. Tea, coffee, sugar and milk is provided together with, for our stay, wine and flowers.
In a busy but relaxing week we walked to Goathland across the woods and back along the rail trail, visited the Ryedale Folk Museum, walked to Glaisdale, climbed Roseberry Topping, been to Staithes and walked along the cliffs to Runswick Bay, visited Rievaulx Abbey and walked around the Hole of Horcum. Several pleasant walks are available form Grosmont wihtout driving anywhere
We ate at the Goathland pub for Sunday lunch and the Witching Post in Egton one evening. Both excellent.
The surrounding roads are narrow and very hilly on direct routes but main roads are available to most places at the price of a little further distance.

We booked Grosmont House as we were going to Whitby for Goth weekend. Whitby is a short train ride from Grosmont and the railway line is a 5 minute walk away. The North Yorkshire Moors heritage line also runs through Grosmont and Grosmont House is an ideal place to stay, especially the two cottages, located at the bottom of the garden if you're a steam train enthusiast.

Accommodation in Grosmont is of a high standard, with plenty of excellent cafes for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. However, places providing an evening meal are limited to two venues, the Station Tavern and the Steam Cafe. I can only recommend the latter.

Grosmont is great if you love Steam Trains as the NYMR runs through there. There are also engine sheds that you can visit, very interesting. There's a couple of tearooms, one on the station, one or two shops and a pub. It's a sleepy place so very relaxing. There isn't a lot going on in the evening so make sure you eat early. It's ideally situated for the Yorkshire Moors, Whitby, the East Coast and Heartbeat Country. If you like walking there's plenty of trails you can find.
