YHA South Downs, hotel in Lewes

A refurbished Sussex farmhouse, a 5-minute walk from Southease Railway Station, YHA South Downs is set in extensive grounds and has an on-site restaurant and colourful, modern bedrooms.

The hostel is right on the South Downs Way, so is perfectly located after a long day’s walk. The cafe/kitchen had a good selection of drinks, snacks and meals. The lounge area was really nice too and a great place to relax with a good selection of board games. The staff were really friendly too.

The Dorset, hotel in Lewes

Located in Lewes, The Dorset features a garden, restaurant, bar, and free WiFi throughout the property.

Good value for money. The room was spacious, had lots of nice touches like bottled water, biscuits, lavazza coffee pods, nice smelling shower gel and shampoo. The room had everything you could need. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed the breakfast (muffins, pastries, cereals, yogurts, fruit, toast, juice and hot drinks). They had a fan in the room and you could turn the radiators up or down as needed.

Horsted Place Hotel, hotel in Lewes

Horsted Place Hotel has a garden, shared lounge, a terrace and restaurant in Uckfield. This 4-star hotel offers room service, a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi. Guests can have a drink at the bar.

The hotel occupies a handsome, brick-built Tudor revival house which like the garden is Grade II listed. It stands in extensive grounds, just off a main road. It has clearly recently undergone thorough restoration/redecoration, and the interiors, while retaining period features (the house was owner-occupied until the 80s), are bright and fresh and thankfully free of bling. The bedding is excellent and our rooms at the top of the house were spacious and comfortable. Dinner in the equally spacious restaurant, with views over the grounds, was also very good - a welcome change from the ubiquitous fish-and-chips and pie of the week you meet when travelling across England, and no more expensive than at the pub-type hotel we stayed at the previous night. Breakfast was also fairly good.

    So much history.

So much history. Loved the buildings, the motte and bailey castle, the priory remains in the park, the independent shops and cafés. Everything is within walking distance. Great to have a railway station and Brighton only 9 miles away. Superb views and walks over the South Downs.

    Interesting county town.

Interesting county town. A few things to do inside there (eg castle and priory, Depot cinema by the station). Or excellent transport links to coast (Seaford preferable to Newhaven unless you want to catch the ferry to Dieppe) and Brighton of course. The self contained area of Downs to the east are my favourite. Quieter than the main range of the Downs to the south so you can just roam around and enjoy the peace. Or you can walk along the river as far as Newhaven but this can be quite muddy when it's been raining. Beautiful flat walk though if you go when it's dry, or don't mind mud!

I lived near Lewes from 2000 to 2005 so know the area. Am fond of the Riverside area with its eating places, also the High Street. Perhaps not a huge amount going on, and perhaps the "Information Centre" could be done up/revamped a little more, but the town is in an excellent central location for a holiday spent exploring locally.

Lewis is an old town full of interesting history, lots of old buildings and of course the castle that's always worth the walk up the hill, don't worry if you're not too fit as you can get a local bus to the top of the hill. Lots of wonderful pubs and cafes in the town centre along with some nice restaurants. The town is surrounded by stunning scenery all around.

I stay in Lewes frequently for visits to Glyndebourne.

I stay in Lewes frequently for visits to Glyndebourne. The local taxi firm (GMC Taxis) are very good and are prompt when picking up at the arranged time both to get to Glyndebourne and to return. The town itself has much to offer with interesting shops and historic places including the Castle. Hotel accommodation is very limited since the closure of The Shelleys and Pelham House. Parking is expensive

Fantastic Lewes apartment. The place is warm and roomy, spacious, well appointed, very well located within Lewes and a short drive to Brighton. We were particularly happy with the addition of a separate dryer and washing machine. Apartment is a short walking distance to historic landmarks plus shops, restaurants and supermarkets. Our host Sara was very responsive and friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

It was a lovely welcome, very clean, deluxe, comfortable, great products, high thread count bed linen, warm, cozy and tastefully decorated. Small kitchen and private living room was ideal and the ease of being in the heart of Lewes was so convenient. Vicky was so accommodating and responsive. I highly recommend and would stay again in a heartbeat!

This old hotel is first up a great pub. The antique timber bar is a wonderful piece if work. The staff are friendly, and the beer is good. Our room was spacious and comfortable as well as being quiet. The Dorset was perfectly placed for the start of our nine day walk on the old pilgrim way to Canterbury. A goodbreakfast set us on our way.

Beautiful location, interesting historic building, delicious breakfast, fabulous meals, great wine, wonderful ambiance and just the best bed sheets I have had in a hotel for quite some time. October 2023 there are building works next door didn’t worry us at all but some guests were more disturbed by this.

I stopped over very briefly between two shifts I was working in Lewes. I had a disturbed night of sleep due to snoring (I was in a dorm room), but that is hardly the fault of YHA. The bathroom facilities were excellent, and I enjoyed a hot shower with good water pressure, which was much appreciated.

The hotel itself is nice. The bed was comfortable and it is in a nice central location in Lewes. The 24 hour reception was ideal for us as we arrived at 1am in the morning after our wedding reception. Unfortunately it did mean that we didn’t get to use the pool but I am sure we will be back again.

Really clean and very comfortable house, spotless organisation by the host. Ideal if you want to relax. The location is convenient, out of the way but close enough that you can walk everywhere in Lewes. I really value how well and worry-free I felt after having stayed 3 days, thanks!

The room was fine and the continental breakfast very good. Prices very reasonable. This a lively town pub that is just off the town centre. It does not have its' own car park but there is on street and a car park right outside.(10 minutes away). Great place en-route to Newhaven

The property was perfect in every way. The hosts were very welcoming and freindly. Location was a little out of Lewes but in no way detracted from us enjoying the break. If anything it was nice to be out of it all a little we felt more chilled and relaxed.

Cheap dorm accommodation near Lewes for Lewes bonfire night. Short 3.5 mile cycle in. Opened early so we could book in and get into Lewes before all the roads were closed. Access to farmhouse to add boiling water to my oat pot and a cup of Rooibush.
