The Old Down Inn, hotel in Midsomer Norton

Located in Radstock, in a historic building, 23 km from Bath Spa Train Station, The Old Down Inn is a bed and breakfast with a garden and bar.

The centuries old building, although that must make it difficult to meet modern living expectations. Maxine and other staff were lovely and informative. Very enjoyable evening meal and a monster breakfast in the morning! Lots of interesting artefacts and snippets of information. Despite being close to a road junction we were not disturbed during the night by noise.

Location was fine (Vobster Quay diving) and the room was well appointed quiet and confortable and warm. Food in the restaurant was very good if a fraction pricy. At first I could not find the glass mugs but discovered those in the cupboard along with coffee and tea making facilities. One very good feature was the number of power sockets and USB charging outlets. Hot water comes quickly from the hot tap rather than having to wait ages as in some hotels. Very friendly helpful staff.

The restaurant was very disappointing. The the dinner menu was poor. The food was not of good quality expected from Best Western Hotels. When we complained the manager he argued and was very abrupt at best if not rude. This comment is only directed at the manager the other staff were very good and helpful.

Due to the rise in the Covid virus. We did not eat at the hotel. We were attending a Service of thanksgiving for the life of a friend who died recently and following the service there was refreshments supplied by the church members.

Had made such great adaptations for Covid. The staff are some of the most helpful and friendly of any hotel I’ve stayed in. And the eggs at breakfast were so delicious and freshly cooked!!
