The Ramblers' Rest - Princetown, hotel in Princetown

Boasting a spa and wellness centre and views of quiet street, The Ramblers' Rest - Princetown is a guest house situated in a historic building in Princetown, 37 km from Newton Abbot Racecourse.

Wow. Just wow. After some unexpected weather and car troubles, 'Rambler's Rest' couldn't be a more fitting name. The owners went over and above to ensure we had a terrific stay, the GIGANTIC hot tub with spa shoes and robes was a real treat and the eco friendly toiletries were a very welcome surprise. Thought and care has gone into every inch of this place and after swearing I'll never go hiking in Dartmoor again, knowing this place exists actually makes it feel not quite so daunting. It was an emergency booking after our camping gear didn't perform quite as we wanted in the hail and the rain and our boots weren't quite prepared for the amount of bog we encountered so it was a true oasis. It makes me really happy that in a world of chains that places like this still exist, where passion and personality can shine through and make a trip to the English countryside a true delight, no matter what else is happening with the weather! Despite feeling quite beaten up by our hiking experiences we were so refreshed the following day after staying here that we ventured out again on waking for a coastal walk instead of scurrying back to the city as we were promising ourselves before we arrived. Thank you Nikki and Terry for turning 'nightmare' into 'adventure' and making the trip something we could laugh about as soon as the following day. We'll be back!

Room was a family room, 2 bedroom very clean.

Room was a family room, 2 bedroom very clean. Make sure you drive the A road up to the property not the B road if you don’t like height’s. Bar stops serving food at 9pm so if travelling late maybe ask them to save you something or make a sandwich. Remember you are high up so the weather can be very different to what it is further down the hill.

Restaurant closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and en-suite shower room was really really small so not worth the extra charge. Staff and breakfast excellent and location fantastic. Frontage could be given more kerb appeal.

For walking, the Princetown area is excellent for walkers and hikers when the weather is benign. In season, there are several eating places in the town whilst there are good facilities in and close to the neighbouring Postbridge area. Public transport in Princetown is minimal.

Went to the prison museum which was worth a visit and it came across as cold and hard but then the prison was like that years ago, the tourist information in the old hotel is worth a look round and has various exhibitions running. Plenty of walking and cycle path from Princetown but watch the weather as it can quickly change as it did when I was there.
