Very nice restored hotel with a lot of charm, very friendly staff and good service, good breakfast and excellent restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere, great view from the terrace and certain rooms.
Be aware that you're remote on a hill above Varese, but that's what makes this place special. Nice surrounding area with a lot of possibilities for hiking, etc..
Visiting Varese and traveling by train and bus/cable car is possible and quite easy, even with luggage (hotel helps with timetables).
Just a few steps from Cittiglio Train Station, and 5 km from Lake Maggiore, Hotel La Bussola offers free bike rental. Rooms have satellite TV and most have air conditioning.

The location was awesome. The restaurant was very good although the menu was quite limited.

You should be a little good on foot to reach the accommodation. But you have a wonderful peace and nature. In the palazzo itself you feel like royalty, and you're being looked after by lovely hosts. If you like something special, an incredibly beautiful and unusual home. Lake Maggiore can be reached quite quickly by car. Likewise the other sights, such as the Sacro Monte or the Borromean Islands.
