Ohanabatake, hotel in Higashi-araya

Situated in Tsuruoka, 17 km from Kamo Aquarium, Ohanabatake features accommodation with a garden and free private parking.

Bedclothes smelled fresh and clean. We slept reasonably well. A bit marmite : either you don't mind a bit of grubbiness ( apart from bedclothes) and like the good value or it feels too depressing.

Shukubo Daishinbo, hotel in Higashi-araya

A 350 year old temple inn, Shukubo Daishinbo offers Japanese-style accommodation, a large public bath and free Wi-Fi. Featuring a garden and free parking, the property lies surrounded by nature.

Historical building with a lot of charm. Very close to the start of mount Haguro's ascent. The feeling of being far from the world and in a place of pilgrimage was clear and strong. We had vegetarian temple food and it was delicious: a truly culinary experience. The room was spacious and lovely. If you travel in the fall the house could get a bit chilly but nothing that can't be shaken off by the warm beds, and the very nice shared hot baths! Also very special and fascinating to participate to the morning prayer. They had an interpreter for us during it and it was much appreciated.

Tamonkan, hotel in Higashi-araya

Surrounded by sacred mountains and untouched nature, Tamonkan is housed in a historic Japanese-style building. Complimentary tea and snacks are served to welcome guests.

This was my third time staying and I will return again. I really love the cooking which uses many dishes only found in this area. It’s a short walk to the start of the Haguro San stair walk so it’s ideal to stay here if you are planning to do the walk.

Hagurokan, hotel in Higashi-araya

Situated among spiritual mountains with a rich history, Hagurokan offers traditional Japanese-style guest rooms in a historic building.

The owner, Yoshi-o San was incredibly helpful. Although he doesn’t speak a lot of English (please note, this Rokyan isn’t for your regular tourist, but for someone who wants to get deep into japanese culture), he was keen to understand my broken japanese and even drove me to the ski slope when I wanted to go. The room was stunning with a REALLY comfy bed.
