it's a place more convenient for self-drive although they do have a fixed shuttle timing every day to fetch check-in customers. it was kid friendly and we could even find baby yukata for our 2yo toddler complete with shoes that fit her feet too. stayed in the new wing which was clean and had a lovely view as well. dinner buffet was also provided but it paled in comparison to our onsen hotels in hokkaido. one thing great was the free flow alcohol which many evidently enjoyed. they also had an ice cream machine. stargazing event was lovely, but do take note to dress warmly (some guests decided not to go out of the hotel due to the strong winds).

We really enjoyed our stay.
We booked a room with its own outside onsen tub, which was excellent. As we had our own private onsen, we did not use the common bathing facilities.
As there are no restaurants anywhere near the hotel, we ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel each day. They prepared different meals for us each time, and the meal presentation and taste were outstanding.
The staff were also excellent, and attended to our every request. Several staff members were able to speak English as we can't speak any Japanese.
The location is a bit out of town along a winding forest road. It would be impossible to get to the hotel without a car and google maps.
With the meals our stay was somewhat expensive but we would definitely stay again when we are in the area.
Surrounded by forest, tranquil Yamashinobu features public and private hot spring baths, an astronomical observatory and a piano.

The onsens are great.
The staff is amazing! We forgot a coat and they packed ir and send it to our adress, the package was neat.
The food is also great, usually I am not a big fan of Japanese style breakfast, but here it was so delicious that it did not bothered me at all.
The portions of food are quite big.

Location is in a quaint onsen town with plenty of onsen to try. You can get the pass that last for 6 months 3 onsen or 2 onsen/ snack at the information centre.
We got free access to the sister hotel /onsen just for staying here.
The kaiseki meal on the first night was insane. The sake was incredible. The server from Myanmar was great and very friendly.
Room was warm and futons comfortable, the view was also great. Onsen choice at this ryokan was also amazing, especially the outdoor onsen, we booked it twice.
My husband is very tall and they were able to give him a larger / taller Yukata to wear which was very nice of them.
Free loose leaf green tea in the rooms.

What an extraordinary stay! We had one of our best nights in Japan at Okyakuya!
From the first minute the service was outstanding, our baggage was transported to our room, car parked. Great room, even tough traditional it was modernized keeping its original charm.
Both dinner and breakfast where amongst the best we had in any Ryokan we stayed at.
After checking out we where offered additional towels as we wanted to explorer other Onsens in town
