FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

Funchal is beautiful, we stayed in the old part of Funchal.

Funchal is beautiful, we stayed in the old part of Funchal. Plenty of restaurants and cafes serving quality food. Close to the sea front, shops, cable car, bus parking and taxi rank. Beautiful gardens, again with cafe serving snacks and hot/cold drinks. Plenty of wonderful museums to visit. We were fortunate to see the 4 day Tropical Fruit event with free concerts. Another magnificent free concert in the garden during the evening. Plenty of opportunity to pay for trips, we experienced Levada Walk, Catamaran to see dolphins, Galleon tour, visit to West and East side of island, Monte Palace Gardens and Botanical Gardens, afternoon tea in Reid’s a must. Porto Santo on ferry was excellent, stayed for 3 days. So much to see and do on the island. Found the locals very friendly and welcoming. We can’t say anything negative about Funchal it was all positive and going to miss it.

Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the island's size) that has small city vibes; it's filled with history and has its charm. Though very touristy, you can find many spots with local life (this in March/April). This could be very different during high season. Climate/temps is also great. Even though it's pretty steep in some parts, the city is very walkable (for those that don't mind getting the steps in), though taxis are a great option to get around Must dos/pros: - Monte cable car - Carreiros do Monte (sled rides) - Botanical garden - Boat tour to Desertas islands - Levada walks/tours - Private or group tours of the Island (I recommend Hit the Road Madeira - they're the best hands down!) - Many good restaurants - the people are very nice and friendly Cons: - In some parts the city is extremely steep and for people with mobility problems this may be an issue - Depending how many cruise ships are docked, the sudden inflow of tourists can be a pain - 5G towers everywhere (this is especially important for people that are sensitive to nnEMFs and/or give a sh*t for their health - don't forget to soak in the sun and ground as much as possible to counter the bad nnEMF effects) - Mercado dos Lavradores is pretty but a tourist trap (worth the visit but not for shopping)

There is plenty to see and do in Funchal.

There is plenty to see and do in Funchal. Withing the old town you will find many restaurants along with shops and the old market. Moving around the south of the island using the public busses is very easy, if you plan to do this, we would suggest buying a multi-day travel tickets for the duration of your stay: available at kiosks on the front at Funchal. Google Maps worked very well with planning trips using the local transport. Travelling to the north of the island we found hard to organise using the public transport is not easy, our suggestion would be to hire a car for these trips or join one of the organised trips which we did avoiding parking issues at the popular locations. If you plan to walk the lavedas, plan you trips ahead of arriving on the island to avoid frustration when trying to work out where to join/exit the walks.

We really liked Funchal! HOwever, most accomodations are very noisy because of the road traffic, scooters, shouting people on the street, etc. so one has to really choose wisely!!! I found Funchal town to be very clean and larger than expected. Interesting older part but generic modern area which was less interesting. Nice sea front and beautiful town park. The cable car up to the gardens at Monte Palace was a nice experience. We enjoyed a long levada walk in the mountains and catamaran boat trip along the coast and saw dolphins. There is much more to explore so I would like to return to the island in the future. Perfect weather and temperature for an active holiday.

The best thing related to the property is that it really seemed to be a genuine house of a Madeiran family. Lots of things previously used by the family, which in our view is a family of intelectuals, are still in the house like furniture, books, nice music. Beautiful garden and lots of flowers. Many facilities that bring you close to the facilities of your own home. Elsa is a very helpful and friendly person. Local restaurants with excellent food and store are at walking distance. Good price for what the property has to offer.

View from our room was outstanding - could see the Sea and all of Funchal. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent and tasty. Location is good for the older area of Funchal, however be prepared to walk up hill to get back from the centre of town (all of Funchal is either going up or down hills!). Madeira are nice and strict on the COVID rules (masks, sanitiser and distancing), the hotel was an example of the rules being followed across the island and I felt safe there.

Hotel is centrally located to walk everywhere in Funchal. You're in a walking only area but it's a short block to catch any taxi or tour pick up. It's away from the over touristy old town & busy main streets. The roof top bar/garden/dining area is very pretty & provides a great view of the ocean, town & mountains - don't miss the free Fado entertainment on Wednesday night. Breakfast is amazing with many options including delicious fresh fruits (as a bonus, the breakfast staff is super nice).

Spacious, clean, comfortable triple room. Clearly is recently refurbished, everything looks like new. Our room was facing the garden so It was very silent at night. Excellent and various breakfast. Free parking on the side of the hotel or in the underground parking (if you are lucky - we were 🙂). Good location, near a beautiful little park and about a 15-20 minutes very pleasant walk to the old city of Funchal. Highly recommended, would stay here again if back in Madeira.

We got in late and they had freshly made sandwiches and a bottle of Madeira wine waiting for us!! The location was remote while being close to everything and is easy walking distance to the tropical garden, the most beautiful botanical garden I’ve ever seen. It was easy to get into Funchal but a nice distance away to feel more secluded. The cafe had a wonderful view and a cozy patio. We would definitely stay here again!

The location was perfect since it is in the heart of Funchal. Madeira is beautiful and we will be coming back but not to this hotel.
