The hosts were warm and friendly and managed to overcome our language barrier with grace and good humour. They offered coffee when we arrived and home made Horica as soon as we sat down. The room was spacious, clean and so comfortable - the best bed in over a month of different hotels/pensiones! The ensuite bathroom was spotless. And the handmade embroidered wall hangings were simply beautiful. We were offered dinner for 50RON pp and it was a delicious 3 course traditional meal. This pensione is located in the traditional Romanian village of Breb in the mountains of Maramures. There is only a very weak internet signal but you will not miss it. A wander around the village and you will be so glad you switched off.

    Such a beautiful little hamlet!

Such a beautiful little hamlet! The fields surrounding Breb are gorgeous, with some looking like rice terraces. Very safe village with authentic Maramures wooden houses and farm land. Best kept gem in Romania!

Bréb is a beautiful, calm village where you can see real and authentic village life and a lot of animals. The wooden houses and doors are wonderful, in summer everything is full of flowers. It is a good startpoint for excursions to Maramures, UNESCO churches and much more. We tried two places to eat, Casa de Dochia and Bréb 148 Local Food and Garden, both were fantastic with excellent food and very nice people.

    Nice, traditional village.

Nice, traditional village. Beautiful strolls in and around the village. Very popular by Rumanians who come over during the summer hollidays. Hardly any foodshops and the few that are there and badly stocked. In case you are selfcatering you better bring food from the market in Sighet.

One of the best places to eat is Breb 148 Local Food and Garden. They prepare delicious meals and the view is quite spectacular. There is no music playing in the garden, so for that reason alone it became my preferred place to hang out. Another one is Casa Dochia, traditional restaurant and boarding house, which serves traditional food from the county of Maramures and very good horinca (alcoholic drink specific to the area). Word of advice: if you are a vegetarian like me, there aren't a lot of options for you, so be prepared to eat polenta in various combinations throughout your stay. It is fairly easy to get around Breb because there are a lot of signs indicating where the most popular places are. Casa din Vale was our choice for accommodation and I would sincerely recommend it to anyone who wishes a quiet, care-free, relaxing vacation in traditional, wooden houses. One of the trails towards Creasta Cocosului goes through the village, not far from Casa din Vale if you have a desire for adventure. There are also horseback riding options in the village or you can visit traditional artists at their homes and experience the magic of woodworking or pottery.

Quaint little village, old wooden houses and very welcoming people. Will cater to all ages and all types interested in rural tourism - this is what Breb does best. The surroundings are beautiful and the lifestyle is like the place was frozen in time. Highly recommended.

I almost don't want to recommend it for fear of tourism bringing too much change, but that would be selfish. Breb is an oasis of peace, tranquility and an opportunity to still experience life and tradition that didn't see much change for 100s of years, although change is happening. It is a rural village that is welcoming and has facilities, but not a place if you are looking for all the home comforts and retail and food outlets. Breb offers a base for exploring this beautiful part of Romania and there are tourist opportunities for visits and experiences through advertised groups.
