Pioche like many other small Nevada towns suffered during the COVID shutdowns. It looks as if some shops that were closed due to lack of business may not reopen. Others may have closed before the pandemic because of deeper economic troubles. In recent times regional droughts have affected farming and reservoir-based tourism. It seems many residents only use Pioche for seasonal or weekend visits, so there can be times when it appears on the verge of being a ghost town. Still, that said, there are sturdy residents who love living in this quiet, unpretentious town. We stayed right on Main Street, and what limited traffic there is could sound a bit loud - as did the neighborhood dogs - because this part of PIoche is built up a slope. When quiet, the town is deliciously quiet! Especially 10pm to 7am were perfect for sleeping - as was the clean mountain air. The residents we spoke with were very friendly and welcoming. The location is perfect for exploring the region. We visited all the state parks, especially enjoying Kershaw-Ryan SP, and Cathedral Gorge, and the road to Ursine. But fascinating, varied rock formations everywhere. And mining district carries its own fascination. We did a lot of driving to get to Pioche and environs, but we will return!
