We stayed here for one night and loved the experience. At the check-in we were greeted by the lovely couple who runs the place. Despite speaking little English they communicated with us with kindness and were very welcoming. The room feels authentic and traditional, with a small balcony and a view to the small river nearby. The room was clean and quiet and we had a private toilet. The Onsen was definitely a highlight. We had it all to ourselves and loved the experience. Breakfast was early but good too (we chose the continental breakfast instead of the Japanese breakfast). Overall, it is a wonderful place, definitely recommended!

Yamakyu features classic Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi. Indoor and outdoor public baths are available for guests to relax in. JR Takayama Train Station is a 20-minute walk away and a free shuttle service is provided from the station. The Kaiseki was great and it felt like the food kept on coming during breakfast and dinner. We probably put on quite some weight over our 2 nights stay here. One thing we had to get used to was the fact that there was only public bathroom instead of a private bath, but we got over that very quickly after the first bath. Location is good too as it is about 10 minutes walk to the old town. The staff and owner were extremely friendly and welcoming. This is one of the best Ryokan we have ever stayed in in Japan with great value.

We visited here one night only, but were blown away by the quality of the food and the exceptional service. The staff were all kind and made our honeymoon feel that much more special, including taking photos for us (which they gave framed to us later!) and a surprising gift as well. They fed us so much delicious food during breakfast and dinner as well, and we enjoyed every bite. I've been the numerous ryokans before, but this experience was truly a cut above. Would gladly go back given a chance, and loved the convenient location as well to explore Takayama. Can't recommend enough!

Above expectations, peaceful place to stay with owners showing high degree of hospitality and authenticity. Very high level cooking with quality ingredients (breakfast and dinner), which normaly will be found in high class restaurants. Discovery of surprisingly good natural wines. Great kind of Zen atmosphere due to the location, the interior design, the music, all very relaxing...so it felt like home.
Nice decor. Conveniently located , near train station. Staff very friendly. Oh, everyone got to choose Yukata design to wear during stay which is a lovely touch
Gorgeous Boutique Hotel. The staff were attentive and friendly. Usai was particularly helpful on a number of occasions. Walking distance to Takayama Old Town. Free sake, beer and soft drink in the evenings.
Lovely, well designed hotel with great location and large room.
Stylish design and new n very clean
Combination of boutique hotel and ryokan, very comfortable stay in traditional Japanese room, lovely Onsen, delicious Japanese breakfast and wonderful staff. Great location near station, walk to old town and many restaurants, especially Sakurajaya ( 15 mins walk). Recommend booking for a wonderful meal that chef Hiroshi will create for you (see Lonely Planet review).
The interior design of the hotel is superb. Having an onsen on site is a plus too. Very comfortable room
Private bath, beautiful facilities, very convenient location (two minute walk to the station), very lovely staff. Had USB + USBC outlets in the room which was super convenient gorgeous modern design
Great location in a lovely town. Exterior and interior looks very classy yet modern (wooden design). Very friendly staff, free drinks (incl. sake tasting) and cute little spa area. Would definitely recommend spending at least two nights here. Lots to do in town (great food, sake breweries, old folk villages, etc.).
Excellent location. Great staff and really lovely breakfast. Room design was very nice with nice bathroom, very unusual for Japanese hotels. Boutique style. I guess as it was off season it was really excellent value for money.
