Nihonkan 2 stars

Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto

Just 350 metres from JR Kyoto Train Station, Nihonkan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami (woven-straw) floors and traditional futon bedding. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

The air-conditioned rooms at Nihonkan Ryokan include a TV. Guests can choose a room with a private bathroom and attached toilet, or stay in a room with shared bathrooms and toilets. All rooms are non-smoking. The location is great, the futons were comfortable, and I liked how personable and friendly it felt to say hi to the ladies running the place whenever we came in and out. The public bath was enjoyable, and I had fun talking to some of the other guests there, but be aware that it is a traditional public bath where everyone is undressed (it's separated into a women's bath and a men's bath). My brother chose to use the single-person shower instead, and there was one of those available downstairs. There were also toilets in stalls on each floor. I enjoyed the traditional feel of the ryokan, and it was easy to walk to Kyoto station to take trains to other areas, and Higashiyama and Kiyomizudera were an interesting walk away.
