We stayed at the Red Fox Lodge in Myoko for three fabulous nights. It was very comfortable for our family of 4, with adjoining rooms. We loved the authentic Japanese feel of the lodge. Very warm and Brendon, the host, was very kind and friendly and helped us get around town and recommended some delicious traditional restaurants. The boys were lucky enough to get some end of season snow to play in and build a snow man and we were able to do some beautiful treks through the village and up to the waterfall.
It was very helpful to have an English speaking host, as he was able to tell us a lot about the history of the area and showed us rice paddies which are still operational after 600 years. There is a traditional Onsen a short 5 min walk around the corner which was well worth visiting too.
We loved Myoko during the spring time. It was a peaceful change of pace to the big cities and gave us a chance to relax and enjoy walking in nature and looking at the many cherry blossoms that we in bloom with comfortable temperatures each day between 18-23 degrees. Well worth a visit. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Many thanks Brendon for your warm hospitality’s hospitality.

This was my fourth time to visit the Joetsu Myoko Resort. I love how quiet and peaceful it usually is, and the amazing breakfast. However, this time I was quite dissapointed. It was summer holidays and so the hotel was very busy and noisy. I was told that the breakfast room had been refurbished - bigger and better. Breakfast was previously served in a room with amazing views of the golf course and the mountains - it was always peaceful and serene. Now, it is served in a much larger and louder room with no views of anything. The menu has also changed and did not have the same number of special dishes as it had before. The 'new and improved' breakfast was not an improvement in my opinion. The onsen was wonderful as always and the room was clean and comfy. I was also happily surprised when the desk staff spoke to me in English (first time in 4 visits and very much appreciated.) It is a long way to drive if you are not going there to play golf - I used to go for the amazing breakfast but will no longer be doing so.

We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow!
We went to Myoko for the snow and we got the snow! Loved the long ski runs at Suginohara and skiied there 3 days. Also skied one day each at Ikenotaura Onsen and Seki Onsen. Low visibility killed us! Be prepared to ski in low cloud and less groomed tracks.
Lime Resort Onsen was fantastic.
Local restaurants (Chinese, Japanese and Greek) were great food and value for money.

Akakura Onsen is a nice small village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. Some were closed due to the small amount of visitors, but as there was so much snow it was nice to have space everywhere. Good variety of foods, and a few bars. Make sure your lodge has transportation when the shuttle buses don't drive around the resorts (like this month, which made traveling around harder unless you have 4-wheel drive AND snow tires).

We loved the comfy beds and shared lounge, bar & dining area, the hot tub after being out in the snow all day and the freshly prepared breakfast and dinner. Fabulous vegan and vegetarian options and western friendly. Wonderful owners who made us feel so welcome from the start. Felt like a home stay and we could’ve stayed for longer! Great local recommendations and activities close by.
Thank you Chereyne & Brett - the super hosts! :)

On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6.
On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6. The mountain infrastructure is very old and tired which accounts for the low cost of lift tickets. The mountain lacks steepness.
Besides the many small restaurants it lacks a village atmosphere.
The mountain geography doesn't support advanced skiers.
It is not clearly sign posted for runs which also makes it difficult.
We found Japan much more expensive than what it was 5-6 years ago and would probably go back to Canada for more value.

Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants, amazing snow and ski resorts very close by. Very friendly locals, who go out of their way to help you, even with language barriers. Fantastic place to visit for snow sports, lift tickets are incredibly cheap compared to Australia - around $40-50 per day depending on discounts through accommodation, etc. Great place to visit!
The staff were wonderful and really added to our stay and experience in Japan. The rooms were clean and shared facilities clean and cozy. The breakfasts were hearty and delicious and we really enjoyed the dinner that we had at Morino. We had an issue with one of our bags not being delivered from the airport which the staff quickly remedied. When we wanted to stay a few extra nights, they were able to move things around and provide us a room. We were also given great restaurant recommendations and help with reservations. We will 100% be back!
Jen and Pete went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable. As soon as we arrived to the hotel, Pete gave us a detailed tour of all the facilities and recommendations on what to do around the town. The private onsen was amazing and really clean. In fact the hotel was super clean and our room was a great size as well! Loved how breaky was included and the there was a great selection of food too. Lastly, the hotel is in a great location- walking distance to the main strip of restaurants and convenience store.
This guesthouse is really good value for money. The owners are very sweet and welcoming and make this place feel very homey.
It’s also a good location, walking distance from lots of restaurants and to the ski slope. They have a real Onsen, the room is clean, a good size and warm and they have a drying room in the basement.
If you’re looking for a budget option this is a great choice. Would definite recommend and stay again. (But don’t expect western standards, this is a traditional Japanese guesthouse)
Stayed in the hybrid Western/Japanese style room which is spacious and comfortable. décor is fairly basic but the hotel is clean and tidy. Our only criticism is the size of the bathroom. It is on the small size, even by Japanese standards.
Decent sized drying room.
Ski/snowboard hire shop on site.
Location is perfect, right opposite the Kanko gondola and a 5 minute walk in to the Akahura village. We have stayed here before and will happily stay again.
The lodge is in a forest at 1000m altitude. There is deep snow all around in Winter.
Our room had a beautiful view over the forest.
The lodge has its own small indoor and outdoor onsens.
Full board is provided. Dinner and breakfast are Japanese style with good quality ingredients.
They get a lot of snow, a storm cycle can easily bring 50cm of snow overnight so be prepared to dig your car out in the morning, although the access road is cleared daily.
The size of the rooms was excellent with a nice view of the mountains.
There were plenty of facilities with a wine bar, coffee shop, restaurants, and a games room for the kids.
The onsens (hot springs were fantastic, both inside and outside.
Situated in a very convenient location, close to the ski resort and restaurants.
This is an excellent hotel, highly recommended 👌
Hot Breakfast changes day by day, free shuttle from and to myoko station + free shuttle (drop off early morning and pick up during afternoon) to main ski resorts, main lobby is super confy to take some drinks and enjoy the winter la landscape. Nathan is a bit rude on his manners but dont get scared, his very helpful and good host!
This hotel is exceptional. The staff went well beyond for an english speaking guest. They assisted with dinner reservations and train tickets. The hotel collected us from the train station and returned us to the station when they had just had 40 cms of snow!
The hotel has the great snow resort, the snow resort is fabulous, the facilities in the resort are good. Very enjoy to play there.
Staffs are friendly and tried to help and solve problems.
The onsen are great, they have inside and outside area.
The staff are helpful and nice 👍

Location great for ski lifts
Really enjoyed the recent stay at Wakui Hotel. Daisuke and his family and staff were exceptional is every aspect! I would recommend this hotel to all wishing to stay in Myoko Akaura-onsen area.
Great location. Close to everything in Myoko. Miwa the owner is very nice and helped us a lot with local tips. Everything is clean in the hotel. Good drying room for winter gear.
perfectly located ski in and out and access to quaint Myoko village. just a very low key vibe and a very beautiful onsen!! we loved our nabe (traditional Japanese soup) dinner!
This is a wonderful example of traditional Japanese hospitality. The food is amazing and the owner is very warm and friendly. Clean and traditional tatami rooms. Great value.
