I was informed, when I enquired, that the air conditioner is not for cooling. I think he meant that the thermostat was set and can’t be changed. Thankfully, there was a humidifier, I used this to provide cooling air.
I had to open the window to let cooler air into the room. This, of course, caused highway noise to come into the room. I preferred not to overheat, however.
The room temperature shouldn’t be a worry for most people. But being an older person, I’m not able to regulate my body temp as effectively as younger ones.
It was also a 40 mins walk from the station. I later found out there were buses that go near the hotel. I took this upon my departure.

Very close to railway/bus station. Our first Ryokan experience and very happy with it as they had thought through what guests needed and had provided everything needed for a warm, safe, clean stay. Especially liked the ability to get hot water for tea/coffee even on the top floor. Also found a great restaurant just across the alleyway.
Guesthouse SHIGI is located in Nakatsugawa, 46 km from Gero Station, 24 km from Ōi, as well as 24 km from Enakyo Wonderland.

Lovely property that’s been very tastefully refurbished and a fun way to experience more traditional houses. Assi is very helpful and very generously gave us a lift to Magome for the Nakasendo hike. We also really enjoyed Sakashita - there were some good restaurants and it was great to escape the tourists.
Offering a garden and garden view, Nagataki is located in Nakatsugawa, 13 km from Ōi and 34 km from Japan Taisho Village. The property is allergy-free and is situated 12 km from Enakyo Wonderland.

The hotel looks like a beautiful little village for preservation. We slept in a small house that is over 150 years old. The staff is lovely, always looking for ways to help. Dinner and breakfast were works of art.

Incredible location, the guesthouse is small (only a few rooms) which makes it a very peaceful and relaxing place. The hotel stuff was very helpful, the room was super cozy and clean. Definitely would recommend!

A fantastic guesthouse in beautiful surroundings. Keiko san is such a lovely, kind and friendly lady who looks after all the guests so well. The food is superb. Staying at this guesthouse was a highlight of our trip to Japan.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.

The old town was lovely and came over as very authentic.
The old town was lovely and came over as very authentic. Be prepared to walk about 20 mins from the main station to the historic part of town. The people were lovely. I was there on a VERY rainy Monday and not a lot was open but I did find a wonderful izakaya almost immediately over the road and the food was amazing. Good base for hiking out of Magome- get the early bus to skip the crowds in the trail. Magome won’t be open but by the time you get to the end of the trail there will be a nice Japanese man with hot steamed buns ready for you.
Front desk is superb. They have nicely folded origami to give out to little children - and my daughter was delighted! The rooms were nice and clean. We have two non-connected rooms, but as it was the peak travel season, we were glad we found a nice hotel like this one. Its location was also excellent. If you stay here, you must eat at the Prince Matsuba, Nakatsugawa - just opposite the hotel! During my entire stay in Chubu, this restaurant provides the best food at the most reasonable price and great servings.
This is someone's home with only two rooms available to rent, which makes the stay extremely unique and personal. I stayed two nights at the end of my hiking the Nakasendo, and just relaxed and enjoyed the traditional house. Not much in town, but the Okonomiyaki restaurant down the road was a treat, as i was welcomed by the owner and the guests and had a wonderful evening. SHIGI has only recently been renovated by the new owner, speaks great English is very helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!
Magome Chaya is a wonderful traditional guest house with exquisite food…to walk along the Nakasendo Way without staying here would be a true loss…I was travelling alone..one night it was very quiet the other it was very busy…both were managed with equally calm efficiency….you must have the dinner and breakfast..Japanese food and presentation of the highest quality …the small town itself uniquely preserved on a hillside with so many stories of its own..
Short walk from the train station. Welcome drink on arrival. Great selection of craft beers (excluded from the free drink ticket however). They provide great information about Nakatsugawa and nearby attractions. Information about nearby restaurants are detailed and definitely appreciated. The staff are very accommodating. The lounge area is comfortable and inviting. The rooms themselves are decent in size and comfort.
My stay at Nagataki was phenomenal! The location of the hotel is truly beautiful. The staff was extremely courteous and accommodating. As we didn't have a car, they helped pick us up and get to our excursions. The food is amazing -- truly delicious dinner and breakfast which was among the best food we had during our whole trip. We are so glad we stayed here during our trip in Japan.
Guesthouse located in the heart of Magome’s historic old town. Easy to get to (by bus or taxi) from Nagatsugawa Station. Kento is a very kind host and was always available if needed; he took his time showing me the entire guesthouse. Meals not included but Kento booked me a kaiseki dinner at Haginoya (5 min walk from guesthouse) and the entire meal was top quality!
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
This place is such a beautiful old Japanese style building and the area is serene! The interior of the house is simple and aesthetically soothing. My train was canceled so the owner came to pick me up, that was super nice and the station is just 3 min walk. The place is perfect for a getaway and relaxing!
The place is fairly convenient. The room is clean and comfortable with all the amenities required for a short stay. Very polite and helpful staff, not to mention that the food is really nice! It comes with a complimentary breakfast but I had my dinner at the hotel as well and it was great.
A spacious and beautifully decorated Japanese-style room. Meals at the level of Michelin stars. The food is delicious to the mouth and to the eyes as well. A welcoming hostess. Breathtaking view. What else does a person need to have fun? We really enjoyed staying here.
Great location, very warm and cosy. We enjoyed being able to chat with other travellers in the lounge area and during breakfast. The ability to get a meal reservation via the hotel was super helpful in this small village.
Really nice facility, very stylish and clean! We liked the public baths and the breakfast, which was a mix of Japanese and Western foods. Also, the staff were very nice and did speak a bit of English.
Our host was very accommodating, he helped us make a booking for dinner and also drove a friend who was staying elsewhere back to his hotel for a small fee - that was really appreciated.
Fantastic beds - really comfortable. Got a great night’s sleep. Water pressure in the showers was also really good. Large amount of space in the room, very unusual for Japan.
The location is amazing to experience Magome juku. The interior is like a cute well designed and maintained hostel. Really beautiful.
If in magome this is the place to stay.
Excellent multi-course dinner and breakfast. Perfect location in the hillside Nakasendo post-town of Magome and right on the walking trail. Beautiful views in all directions.
