I'm a huge Gegege no Kitaro fan and love Yokai in general, so to me this place is wonderful (I even stayed an extra night). However if you aren't a fan, you might find it a bit perplexing as all the town's attractions are based on this theme. A definite must for anyone who is interested in Mizuki Shigeru's work, otherwise you'll probably find nearby Matsue or Izamo Taisha a better option.

Great little gem at the outskirts of Honshu, better known to Korean tourists, thanks to a nearby airport, than to the Japanese it would seem. The main attractions are the Mizuki Shigeru Road and museum but there are plenty of other things to see and do. Perfect for a weekend getaway or a day trip from Yonago. As a bonus, lots of crab in local cuisine.

Quaint small harbor town famous for a cartoon artist.

Quaint small harbor town famous for a cartoon artist. The main road is completely dedicated to cartoon characters, so is the train going to that station. Places to eat are very hard to find. What there is closes early. Bus service to Yonago and Matsue stations is very limited. The train takes longer and is more expensive. The Sakaiminato harbor has good access to the Oki Islands, which are a UNESCO GeoPark.
