The food, the staff, the hospitality, the easiness (take drink from the fridge and pay in a piggy bank), the free shuttle in the morning to the beach (tokashiki beach), the shuttle service to/from the ferry

This was our favourite stay in Japan and experience overall. The hosts were exceptional and treated us with the Okinawan spirit we weren't even expecting. The location was absolutely fabulous for a chill evening and hanging outside. The yard provided gave a feeling of freedom and a true paradise vacation. The room was comfy with everything needed. The location was very calm and quite and close to the port, providing accesability to transports. The local store right opposite the street provided great convenience for grabbing snacks and drinks for the evening.

Absolutely beautiful location with beautiful views of the sea, beach and islands. The hotel was clean, comfortable and with beautiful views. The staff were very nice and accommodated us for vegetarian breakfast which was vegetable-filled and tasty. We enjoyed the 30-40 min walk to get to the main port area and they offered a free shuttle ride too. We enjoyed our time here and would stay again.

Very comfortable small hotel right on the harbour side on the utterly charming island of Zamami. 2 mins walk from the ferry. Zamami village has various places to eat, we visited in the off-season and many places were closed so we spent our evenings at the La Touquee izakaya. The supermarket on the Main Street was also very handy, they have a fridge full of Orion beer. The fish co op was excellent for lunch as well (assuming they have food left, it often sells out), The hotel has a rooftop hot tub which is nice on a chilly night. Very comfy beds. We had breakfast only once but it was pretty memorable.
Tokashiki is the largest of the Kerama Islands. There are some great spots for swimming, snorkeling, and diving from the shore, but a boat trip will be required for some of the other spots, particularly the northern portion of the island. The roads are narrow, but it's worth touring around the island on some of the back roads for the various views and wildlife.

The December water was warm enough to swim without wet suits, It was off season with few guests. They still made great buffet meals, and were very helpful. No nearby restaurants were open. I would go again and stay longer.

Beaches are terrific.
Beaches are terrific. Go to Aharen Beach early in the morning or after 5 in the evening to avoid the lifeguard Stasi and all their restrictions. The water and coral and fish are terrific. Did a nighttime nature tour with a local guide (no link but his poster is up (in Japanese) at Marine Palace and the staff called him to arrange) that was unforgettable. Owls! A snake. So many crabs. Lizards and geckos. Enormous spiders. So cool.
Overall the island has a very un-Japanese Margaritaville feel. The single restaurant in Aharen Beach, open only after 18:30, is excellent!

If you aren't planning on staying on Tokashiki, at least make the day trip to the island via the ferry. The water, beach coral, and fish are amazing to see. If your lucky enough plan 3 nights there. It is worth it.
