Murayama
Situated within 50 km of Zao Onsen Ski Resort and 500 metres of Murayama Station, Yamagata Guesthouse山形ゲストハウス offers rooms in Murayama. The accommodation features a shared kitchen and free WiFi throughout the property. Staff was extremely welcoming and nice, I am really happy I got to spend some time with them. The location is great- it's close to the station and the whole accomodation is cozy. Indeed the bathroom is on a different floor, but I didn't have problems with hot water or anything so that's more important for me. It can get a bit cold on the halls of the building, but inside the common spaces and rooms it was warm enough. Towels and laundry are available to rent and you can use the big kitchen they have. The bagel breakfast they offered was actually with good bread.

The hosts were more than friendly. The beds are comfortable and the room is clean. The floor heating in the rooms provides warmth without decreasing humidity. The most comfortable stay I had during my ski trip. The hosts will drop off and pick up guests at the lifts so you can enjoy the Zao mountain. Not much around the location so be sure to eat before returning to the hostel.

This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

The food was amazing! I came here for Christmas to see some snow and stayed 2 nights. Both nights the food was soo good and there was soo much. I also had breakfast included and that was good too. The hosts are lovely and even with the language barrier we used translate apps to talk and I had a great time. The house is old and wooden with kerosene heaters, its not super fancy but the blankets on the bed were warm and fluffy, so with a belly full of great food and snow falling outside I slept really well. They even drove me to the bus terminal the day I left. 10/10 highly recommend, especially for the food.

I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.
Yamagata
Boasting air-conditioned accommodation with a terrace, CASA DE YOSHi 一棟貸し is situated in Yamagata. This guest house provides a shared lounge. The property is non-smoking and is located 16 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Cozy house with lots of wonderful places to curl up to read a book or play games with friends. Very family friendly. The host was very responsive to all our needs. There is an amazing supermarket close by so you don't need to cook but there are also good supplies for cooking your own meal. TIP 1: To lock the door, pull the rear panel towards you so the lock can engage. TIP 2: To get the fire going 1. Add pellets in the back compartment 2. Click the black button which is below a white cylinder (it'll compress the cylinder) 3. Light a pelletman firestarter (found in the brown box) and place it in the front area (just behind the glass) 4. Turn on the machine (it will blow air to keep the flame ignored)

The host was really nice, the food was delicious, the room very spacious, and last but not least we had the chance to assist to the morning prayer in the lodge. A very unique experience. The lodge is also very close to the 5-story pagoda and the stairs to the Dewa Sanzan temple.
Great location, 5 mins by foot to the ski lift, great sauna, staff removed snow from my car, good breakfast, clean and quiet room, great view of the forest
Great location, cool little view, there is parking at the back of the building which was really cheap.
Cozy rooms, friendly host, great location
Lovely hosts, great location, clean spacious traditional rooms, electric heater available, nice view from the window, well appointed kitchen, and friendly dining room.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Meigetsuso, Mayuka was our hostess who served our meals, she was charming and helpful and very informative in describing the many dishes served at each meal. The private hot spring bath in the room was a welcome and relaxing feature. We also enjoyed the private rock bath that is available.
Mintaro Guesthouse offers an experience which cannot easily be found! After my arrival I was asked to attend dinner with the host, staff and other guests to enjoy food and drinks. The dinner was donation-based and featured a variety of delicious food and some guests even pitched in and would prepare a special dish or offer some top quality sake. I had a wonderful time talking and eating with everyone. It was like being part of a family!
Great location and close to the city center.
Our hosts were lovely! Fabulous drying room and great location. Japanese breakfast was delightful. Loved the collection of music equipment and eclectic wall hangings
