Backwaters was a lovely spot on the doorstep to the western gate of Wilpattu. They organised a game drive for us (where we saw lots), a river trip and boat ride to our next destination. The rooms and grounds are full of nice, environmentally friendly touches, and the meals are great. Since the centre of the park is a little ways from this gate, a full day game drive turned out to be better than a half day - and allowed usto see lots of elephants at the end of the day.

Set just 38 km from Kumbichchan Kulama Tank, Wilpattu Mookalan Resort provides accommodation in Habawewa with access to free bikes, a garden, as well as room service. Both free WiFi and parking on-site are available at the guest house free of charge. The guest house features family rooms. This is a very private, hidden-away location in walking distance to the National Park. In fact, you can't get closer by staying anywhere else--and this means you save time by getting to sleep in during the morning. The host and owner, Leel, doesn't speak much English, but uses Google Translate to always help. The rooms have the best A/C, and with only a few bedrooms on the property, it's very private and great for bird-watching. Simple, efficient, and relaxing.

At the guest house, all units are equipped with bed linen and towels. The staff was very friendly and helped set up a safari. Make sure to ask about safari price including or excluding the national park fees. The dinner add on was very delicious!

Asian and vegetarian breakfast options with local specialities, fruits and juice are available each morning at the guest house. Guests are welcome to wind down in the in-house lounge, while packed lunches are also available. Wilpattu Green Cabin is a small and friendly family-run establishment in the countryside near Eluwankulama. It is accessible by tuk tuk from the Elwulankulama bus stop. The drivers will know where to go. (It’s about 5 minutes away.) Wilpattu Green Cabin is located right on the Lunu Ela River (I think that is the name) and is a lovely and relaxing spot to take a break. They have two new bungalows with a fan, mosquito nets and veranda that face the river and are spacious, clean and comfy. They also have one room referred to as “the treehouse“ which was entirely crafted out of sustainable “green“ materials. It is more cozy than the bungalows but it is super adorable and has a wonderful vibe. Be prepared to climb a ladder! It costs a little bit more than the bungalows but worth it! They also have a couple air con rooms that are kind of dark and do not face the river in case you absolutely need your AC. You will probably want to purchase lunch and/or dinner at Green Cabin since there is no other easy option but no worries, the meals are tasty and filling. Breakfast was included. The establishment is run by a friendly fellow named Riswan, his brother, sister-in-law and others. Riswan will arrange a Jeep safari to Wilppatu National Park if you like. You can also take a long pole boat ride up the river to look for birds. I did both the Jeep safari and the long pole boat ride and thoroughly enjoyed them. Of note: there is an elephant that sometimes swims the river and sneaks into the adjacent rice paddy for a midnight snack! I would definitely book another stay at Wilpattu Green Cabin, especially in the treehouse!

A good location for a hassle-free stay in Wilpattu, Wilpattu Dolosmahe is a guest house surrounded by views of the quiet street. The property features a garden, shared lounge and parking on-site among other facilities. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and full-day security, along with free WiFi. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. Just about 100 meters from the entrance to Wilpattu wildlife national park. The owner is and experienced tour guide and happily will tell you about the wildlife to be found, both in and out of the park. Just by the entrance to the park is a trail going around a beautiful lake where families come for a bath and swim. We were warned not to not to walk around outside after dark to avoid unpleasant encounters with wild animals. I would defintely go back there to stay if I am in the area.

The staff were so kind to us for the 2 nights. We would like to give a special mention to Johann who cooked our meals which were all so tasty and plentiful. He also provided tea throughout the day. The room was clean and a good size. There was a mosquito net for the bed. The outdoor area was lovely. We sat out there for all of our meals and tea. The wifi worked well which was great as the data around wilpattu was poor. We booked a full day safari through our stay, which was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend staying here when visiting Wilpattu.
