Friendliest staff! Very comfortable, tasteful interiors and you can not beat the location! In a great residential area that is so close to everything! We met wonderful fellow guests and staff there too.

Only a few steps from Matsumoto Castle, Exclusive traditional Japanese house Popotel one features free Wi-Fi, A rental vacation house and a free-use kitchen. It has a living room, a garden and drinks vending machines.

I realize it's stated clearly here, but I was not prepared for how large this space actually is! It is a former hostel which could easily house 10-15 people across multiple bedrooms and you get to rent the whole thing! It has an unheard-of amount of space for lodging in Japan, and it also happens to be within view of Matsumoto Castle and within easy walking distance to the main draws of Matsumoto city. Definitely don't pass on this option if you are traveling with a large family. We were sad to check out.

Overlooking Metoba River, Matsumoto Back Packers offers friendly accommodation in an old Japanese house with a small garden. It is a 5-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station and a 8-minute walk from Matsumoto Bus Terminal. Free Wi-Fi is provided in the entire property.

The location and host, Brian, are great. The owner knows English so it helps with communication. He gave me a great guide of Matsumoto and nearby mountains and where I can travel and eat.

Looking for a hostel?

Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.

Great facilities, everything new, modern and spotlessly clean. Huge wooden bunk beds in the dorms which are much more spacious than the usual hostel dorm beds. Perfect location on a main shopping street. Helpful, friendly staff and a nice common room to meet other guests. I've stayed in a lot of hostels and this is was perhaps my favourite ever in terms of comfort.

Best bunk beds, matresses and (supersoft) bedsheets I've had during my entire stay in Japan. Very comfortable, large beds and the indoor air climate of the dorms is well controlled. Bathrooms are clean and common kitchen is well equipped. Location is perfect, close to main attractions and still only 15 mins walking from the train station (but Matsumoto is not that big anyway). The street is a pedestrian little shopping street, so very quiet at night as well. I loved my stay and would recommend this hostel to anyone going to Matsumoto.

Very friendly hostel, in a great location not too far from Matsumoto castle. Rooms are Japanese style, with lots of space in the dorms. I had a large suitcase with me and there was plenty of storage space for it beside my futon! Lovely staff as well, great vibe in the hostel overall.

The room was well equipped with cheap video on demand, free WiFi, a phone, safe, kettle, amenities in the lobby such as razors & toothbrushes and the shower having both a handheld head and rainfall style was incredible. The vending machines and clothes washing facilities in the lobby were useful and the staff were very polite and nice.

Absolutely brilliant hostel. We loved it. Everything about the place had been thoughtfully arranged. Our traditional room was great. The shared facilities spotlessly clean. The kitchen and lounge area lovely. Facilities for leaving our luggage before check in and the free bikes all just added to the pleasure of our stay. Great location. Highly recommended.

Great location only few minutes from the station. . Close to lots of places to eat. Room was small but fine for 2 people. Very cheap to do your own clothes washing with laundry facilities. Loved that it was older hotel and could open the window.

The hostel is in a great location and so quiet. The staff are really helpful, but best of all you could feel the history of the place. We are a family of four (two boys aged 13 & 11) and all thought it was the best hostel we’ve stayed at - friendlier, more fun and better than many hotels. Would stay there happily again.
