Annabelle Sandes
The Racecourse Inn, originally "The Northern Hotel", was purpose built as a coaching inn in 1860 by Ticket-of-Leave convict William Dean. Constructed of convict made bricks, the inn has two spacious rooms downstairs rooms and one guest room upstairs. The current dining room was originally a ballroom, and features a unique barrel vaulted ceiling, one of only three of its type in Tasmania. Furnished with Australian colonial antiques, the house is still welcoming weary travellers nearly 160 years after it was built.
We love beautifully cooked fresh Tasmanian produce, good wines, photography and exploring the wonderful surroundings of the northern midlands. You'll also find us in the local auction houses searching for antique treasures for this gorgeous house. Richard is a farrier by trade, and after cooking our guests a delicious breakfast, travels northern Tasmania shoeing horses. Annabelle is an artist and photographer, and paints oil portraits of animals, and watercolours of Tasmanian wildlife and flora in her spare time. We enjoy showing guests around our lovely cottage garden, and introducing guests to our animals - our chooks Hester and Parsnip, Pippin, the Tasmanian Smithfield collie, and Delphine, our gorgeous little cat.
Longford was first settled in 1813, part of the Norfolk Plains, a rich agricultural region. As one of the oldest towns in Tasmania, Longford has many Georgian and early Victorian buildings which contribute to a delightful townscape, with two World Heritage properties - Woolmers Estate (also home to the National Rose Garden), and Brickendon Farm Estate - only minutes from the town centre. Well known for its beautiful gardens and English style hedges, Longford is at the confluence of the Macquarie and South Esk Rivers, and also offers some of the best fly fishing in Australia. We are also only a short drive from the beautiful Tamar Valley Wine Route, and an easy day trip from the stunning beaches on the east coast, and Cradle Mountain.
