The wardens were fantastic, showed a great knowledge of the place and area. The garden was also lovely, with plenty of places to sit, and very well maintained. Brilliant to stay in such a historic place for a low price.

It is a privilege to stay in such a historic house which is a living museum. Therefore one cannot expect to have the modern luxuries of a custom built hotel.

Company information

Talbot House is mainly run by volunteer resident wardens who will welcome you upon your arrival. After showing you to your historic bedroom, they remain available for questions or a chat. Many of our volunteers come from the four corners of the globe although most of them are from the UK. Some of them have been joining us on and off for over a decade. As tradition dictates, they pass on the warm welcome they in time received when first visiting the House. And don't forget, the kettle is always on...

Property information

Talbot House offers you both a unique and authentic experience in a historic home from home, a living museum. Talbot House was founded in Poperinge in 1915. During World War I, this small city was used as a garrison town for the British soldiers and very soon it became a thriving metropole. Two British army chaplains rented the Coevoet mansion and turned it into an "Every Man's Club", open to all to make it their home from home. "An oasis of serenity in a world gone mad", is probably the best way to describe The Old House. Just like thousands of soldiers and pilgrims before you,Talbot House welcomes you to stay the night. Through its authentic atmosphere and unique location near to the Poperinge market square, the Old House offers a unique historic overnight stay. Every room has its own legacy and name, explained to you in a small souvenir booklet for you to take home with you. And did we mention the large English cooked breakfast already? Many other accommodations might well be situated near a historic site or provide a great view onto one, but staying at Talbot House means becoming part of its history. is there a better way to relive the past and touch history?

Neighbourhood information

A stay at Talbot House goes hand in hand with a complementary visit to the various exhibitions and grounds. Do as you do at home is the credo of the House. Poperinge is a cosy small town next to the Belgian-Franco border. When you pass endless hopfields, you are heading the right way. Home to several world renowned breweries such as St Sixtus, St Bernardus, Plukker, etc. , Poperinge also boasts a hop & beer festival. The many Great War Cemeteries serve as silent witnesses to the hospitals which ones occupied the hop fields. Poperinge is about an hour from the Channel and 15 minutes from the Ypres area. It's a great base to discover the Great War history.
