I rue des Marais is in the heart of the old town of Charolles, next to the River Semence. Maison Marais was built in 1790 and extended in 1846 . We offer you the entire 'West Wing' which is a private family suite of three double rooms. If you only want the principle room, that is fine, the other rooms will remain empty. Please contact us if more than 2 guests. There is a new salle d'eau and a quiet library area. You'll have your own front door leading to a kitchen where you can make tea and coffee or keep cold drinks. There is a comfortable private sitting room where you may take your breakfast. When the sun is out, the double doors will be opened onto your own corner of the courtyard garden where you have your own seating area and table. Meals can be taken al fresco if requested.

Charolles, at the heart of the beautiful Charolais region, has a long history as an independent ‘mini-state’. In 1771 it became the very last territory to be absorbed into modern France when it reverted to the French crown, being exchanged with the Spanish king, Charles III, for a small suburb in Paris. The extensive pastures of the Charolais (to the north) and the Brionnais (to the south) are home to the famous Charolais cow. These lovely, gentle and curious white cattle, often with their calves, gaze at walkers from behind their hedges and stone walls. There's also the Charolais sheep, a distinct local breed that has gone on to be used in farming around the world. Enjoy the beauiful views that open up around the corner as you pass into a new valley. Charolles has a population of 3,200. As the principal market town for the area, it is well served with 6 boulangeries and an exceptional patissier, great butchers, supermarkets, hairdressing salons and banks. The renowned Lycee with its students, add a vitality to Charolles lacking in many a French country town.
