Company information

Described as "the best-built house for the quality of a gentleman in Wiltshire", The Hall was built around 1610 for John Hall, a local wealthy mill owner. The architect is peculiarly unknown but suspected to likely be William Arnold also thought to have designed Montacute House Somerset, both houses sharing many similar features. Throughout the centuries The Hall has welcomed interesting and outlandish owners, including the Duke and Duchess of Kingston. The Hall would fall into a state of disrepair during the early 19th century as the local woollen cloth industry declined. In 1848 the estate was bought by Stephen Moulton, a pioneer of rubber engineering who promptly restored The Hall to its former glory, including extensive restoration to the stonework and windows on the front of the house. The Hall would pass owners throughout the years with Stephen Moulton's great-grandson, Alex Moulton eventually calling the Jacobean mansion his home. Dr Moulton innovated the automotive world with his ground-breaking rubber suspension systems which would go on to be installed in iconic vehicles such as the original Mini. However, the industrious engineer and inventor is best known for developing the Moulton bicycle, renowned for speed, efficiency, durability, and comfort and is still produced on the estate today. After he died in 2012, Dr Moulton gifted the Hall to the Alex Moulton Charitable Trust. The Trust continues to preserve and maintain the Hall and its historic collections, showcasing engineering and design and promoting the Hall as a community hub and venue for guided tours, historical and educational talks, events, and luxurious stays.
