The old town stands on a limestone island surrounded by mighty walls, and its urban layout has essentially remained unchanged. It has features of extraordinary interest; it is a continuous overlapping of building structures from various eras and cultural matrices. It has narrow, winding streets, a tangle of streets, according to a typology encountered in the Islamic world; this varied layout can be traced back to the first half of 900 A.D., a period when the city was conquered by the Saracens, who ruled it for about thirty years.
