Welcome to Inn Kunai. Our forest homestead is rustic and we like it that way. You will not find manicured gardens, lawns, or the latest appliances, but you might spot hares, badgers and deer nosing about the meadow. Our kitchen, gas-heated shower and composting toilets are all outdoors. Our sauna is an authentic smoke sauna (for those who don't know, there is no smoke when you use it - the name is all about the heating process). If you are interested in using the sauna, please inquire before your arrival.
The basic outdoor kitchen is ready for you to use: refrigerator, cold cellar, gas stove, freezer, barbeque, pots, pans, utensils, plates, and hot running water for washing up. If you don't feel like cooking, the hosts are happy to serve meals at an additional cost (ideally with advanced notice) - we met working at a top restaurant in the Hamptons in New York, where Joel was a cook and Simona waited and tended bar. We often cater outdoor events, and even organize a few.
This is a rustic 19th century homestead in a village deep in Šimonių forest beside the Šventoji River. The home has a rich history and once functioned as the village church. The original buildings have been repurposed to accommodate guests while retaining their character. The deluxe family room is located in the main house, and the other accommodation is in the Kleitis, a traditional Lithuanian homestead building that has been converted into two cozy rooms. You'll feel like you've stepped back into a different time. It is the perfect place to go to escape modern life, try out simple living, and recharge in nature.
Inn Kunai is the site of the annual Miško Festival.
We are a family of three who have been living at the homestead for the past few years after a life of world travel.
Joel Mowdy is an author of fiction and nonfiction from New York. His book of short stories, FLOYD HARBOR, published in 2019, was a New York Times “New and Notable” book and has been compared to the works of Denis Johnson and Irvine Welsh (author of Trainspotting). Other writing of his has been published in World Literature Today, Guernica, and various other journals. In addition to writing, he has been a writing teacher for more than fifteen years, working at universities and high schools in America, Lithuania, Mexico, and Indonesia.
Simona Vaitkute is an environmental journalist, editor, and educator. She runs the annual Miško Festival, an international project dedicated to ecological culture and exploration of our relationship with nature.
Oskar is a young filmmaker and actor. He played Tsarevitch Alexei in the Netflix series The Last Czars.
We love to host guests and share our love and knowledge of our quirky little village in the woods.
Our homestead is surrounded by forest and meadow, close to the Šventoji River. Nearby are several old homesteads, a wooden church, and a cemetery. This area has long attracted artist, performers, and other interesting folk. Some of our neighbors are self-sustaining farmers, so fresh dairy and produce is always at hand. The area is rich in history and mystique and is known for its natural beauty. For many years, Inkunai was easier reached by river than found by road. The nearest store is far away, so be sure to stock up before your arrival.
