Riverfields B&B Farm Accommodation is only five minutes from New Zealand’s main highway, yet offers a quiet, homely, rural experience like none other. Set on a spacious 125 hectares Riverfields Farm offers two accommodation options, The Cottage and The Loft. The Cottage is a carefully restored one bedroom cottage. Orginally built in 1962 as a single man’s cottage in the mountains; it was relocated to Riverfields farm in 2012. Set apart from the owner’s home, amongst cropping fields, grazing animals and mountain views, The Cottage has its own private garden. The Loft provides scenic views from a private second floor location above the main farmhouse residence. Newly remodelled in 2016, The Loft offers peace and solitude with views from the large, sunny deck. Relax listening to bird song and the wind in the trees. Enjoy the tranquillity of watching sheep graze and the lovely garden. Both The Cottage and The Loft are perfectly placed for views of the Southern Alps and Mount Hutt. Stretch your eyes across the expansive Canterbury plains. Watch sunsets from your deck and awake early to the amazing sunrises.
A warm welcome waits at Riverfields Farm with an opportunity to meet friendly kiwi hosts Debbie and Ian. The couple enjoy connecting with travellers throughout the world. They are committed to giving their guests a genuine and homely experience, off the beaten track. They love to share their lifetime knowledge of both traditional crop (arable) and livestock farming. Ian has a keen interest in history and genealogy, while Debbie is passionate about art and travel. Guests can take their farm tour and visit the wool shed. Debbie and Ian will describe the process of taking the wool from the live sheep, showcasing its unique characteristics and wide range of end uses including spinning wool as a natural fibre with a spinning wheel. They’ll demonstrate how the animals are farmed and answer questions about their care and management. Learn about the specialist seed, crops and cereals grown in the fertile soils. Riverfields Farm has lambs grazing on pasture paddocks in the late summer and autumn also, throughout the winter and into the spring until October. They also hand rear calves until they are four months old. These calves are then on sold to cattle and sheep properties.
Riverfields Farm is ideally located to the amenities of a bustling provincial town, and is set amongst stunning scenery and activities every way you choose to head. The location boasts fishing spots on its doorstep such as Lake Hood, Hakatere/Ashburton River and the wild, stony Ashton Beach. Guests can enjoy on-farm-tours at Riverfields and an easy walking or cycle track which follows the Hakatere/Ashburton River Trail to town or to Lake Hood. Bicycles are provided. Nearby are national conservation parks, legendary nature walks and trekking, lakes and forests for bird watching and alpine bike trails for mountain-biking. Riverfields is an easy drive to Tinwald and Ashburton Domains plus a variety of golf courses, museums, art galleries, local shops and the Regent Cinema. Near-by dining includes The Lake House, The Stables, and Braided Rivers. Scenic travellers can behold stunning inland lakes while adrenaline seekers can discover Skydiving Kiwis, Ballooning Canterbury, Discovery Jet boat tours and Mount Hutt or Porters Pass ski-fields. Or visit Mt. Sunday as part of a Lord of the Rings tour offered by Hassle-Free.
