Mariensztat itself is a neighbourhood in Warsaw's borough of Śródmieście (city centre). It is located between the Vistula river and the Old Town. The historical neighbourhood dates from the 18th century, when local nobleman Eustachy Potocki married Maria Kątska and received the parcel of land as part of Kątska's dowry. He established a jurydyka and named the town Maryenstadt after his wife, adding the German suffix stadt to please the Saxon king of Poland. After World War II, the spelling was changed to Mariensztat, but this did not change the pronunciation.The neighbourhood was razed to the ground during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Reconstruction work began in 1948, involving a complete redesign of the street plan and architectural appearance of the area. Mariensztat became a model housing project under Poland's new communist authorities, and was the first part of the city to be completed in their ongoing reconstruction of Warsaw. Mariensztat as well as being nestled next to Warsaw Old Town is close to the University , the River ( a hive of activity in the summer ) and the up and coming Powiśle area. Mariensztat is easily accessible by bus, taxi and by foot.

Something about Marensztat... We love the square - it's seldom busy but situated right next to Warsaw Old Town and has a very local character. You'll find a charming cafe, a chemist, a pub, a Chinese restaurant and ... just us locals ! And most of all we think it's one of Warsaw's prettiest spots in the summer, sitting by the fountain or enjoying a coffee or beer enjoying the view. Just a few minutes walk and you are in the centre of historic Warsaw with almost every other site or museum just a walk or bus ride away.
