Property information

The House of Cantoneiros is ready to accommodate 6 people comfortably. It has two bedrooms, one with double bed, the other with bunk beds and a mezzanine with a double bed. It has all the conventional kitchen equipment, vitroceramic hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee machine and water heater. All the outdoor space is enclosed, providing security for the children during their games in the turf area. The barbecue area is covered and fully equipped for the preparation of unforgettable outdoor dining. The wood-burning oven will allow for the most patient ones to experience the flavors of slow food kitchen. It also offers all the outdoor furniture for added comfort, dining table, puffs, hammocks, sofas etc. The House of Cantoneiros is equipped with satellite Tv, DVD and sound system. Approximately 300 meters down the road there is a snack bar-restaurant with free wireless internet. The village of Aljezur is located about 6 km and the nearest beaches are 5 minutes by car. For those who want to explore the surroundings we have off-road bikes. In high season we offer a free daily bread delivery service. We also provide our guests with a surf material rental service at the best prices.

Neighbourhood information

A Cantoneiro was a person responsible for all tasks related with the maintenance of a set of roads in a region (or canton from which the portuguese word cantoneiro derives). The effectiveness of the Cantoneiros' activity, i.e. road maintenance, was only possible with the permanent presence of the cantoneiros in their cantons. Thus, since the mid 19th-century, the portuguese state decided to build dedicated houses for these workers and their families. The properties were simultaneously the place of living for the families and the sites to store all equipment related with the road maintenance activity. This allowed to fix the working force where it was needed, many times at some distance from the main villages. From the mid 20th-century, with the development of the automotive industry and the extension of the road network, the cantoneiros were replaced by centralized construction companies under public contracts.
