Between the Sea and the Mountains: In the heart of the Algarve’s rich, agricultural hinterland, known as the Barrocal, and nestled in the middle of a triangular crossroads between the historic town of Tavira, the picturesque fishing village of Cacela Velha and the breath-taking Algarve mountains, Hospedaria – literally “guest house” - is the latest offering in discreet, rural charm by Grupo Pensão Agrícola. This old roadside store and tavern was first opened in 1917. For decades it served as a vital point for trade and barter of regional farm products, as well as a vibrant meeting point for locals: older villagers still recall the “famous dances” of Cumeada. In those first decades of the 20th Century, here was to be found the only Post Office and public telephone for miles around, helping this remote part of the Algarve stay in touch with the rest of the country and with the world. Left vacant and abandoned over the past 30 years, new life has now returned to the interior and outdoor spaces and to the objects found abandoned here, and ultimately the memories of the busy old times as a roadside store have been revived. Today, Hospedaria is a small, rural hotel.
